as per this thread i cannot see anything on my screen before booting into windows, and pressing some keys will prevent me from going into winows at all. is there a console/run command that i can execute from within windows that will let me reboot into safemode?

I believe you can run MSCONFIG, click on advanced, and tell it to enable the startup menu.

have you tried booting a windows98 startup disk?

I don't have an XP machine in front of me, but there's a startup and recovery menu in control panel - system - advanced that you may be able to change your default 'OS' to 'safemode'

That's one way - but if you can't even get into Windows to run MSCONFIG, there's a simple method.

Boot it and then hit the hardware reset during the XP logo. Forces it to display bootmenu.

This computer at my work place had the same problem, where the monitor was blank until Windows switches into VGA mode. It was apparently caused by a bad connection with the VGA cable. An auto mechanic guy tried to fix it by putting some conductive grease into the connector, and it worked! I wouldn't recommend that solution because it is also likely to cause problems...so just try reseating the VGA cable. If it's a short inside the cable, I hope that yours is detachable...

my card is dual dvi so i just plugged it into the second port, and it worked.

wonderful, usually the simplest solutions are the right ones.
