You might want to have someone look at that stick up your ass.

Boy, you are a witty one.

Hey, what would I know about the subject, I am not going to argue with you, you are right and I am wrong, what would I know, I only have been an A.S.E. certified Tech for twenty five years, worked for every major Automobile manufacturer at one time or another and run my own shop.

You win.
End of conversation.

135K... which does seem a little high for a 95... the car is loaded though with every feature you could possibly ask for.

Don't buy a FWD car with that many miles unless you're prepared to sink in lots of money on repairs in the near future.
You've got to be kidding me. FWD has nothing to do with reliability. The FWD tranny on my Honda went 205,000 miles, and even then it wasn't the FWD portion that broke, the clutch-packs just wore out. One of the CV joints went out after I ran over something and tore the boot off. It as $100 to fix. The other CV was original and was still in the car when I sold it at 218,000 miles.

Assuming proper care, the car will be perfectly reliable.

See what I wrote above. I'm pretty convinced similar repairs for a volvo 850 is gonna cost more than a 240/740.
Gee, repairs on a newer, higher-tech engine will cost more? Wow! You're a genius for figuring that one out. The 4-cylinder in the 240/740/940 put out a whole 108 horsepower and was a very rudimentary engine that traced its roots back into the 1970's. Of course it will be a little cheaper to fix than the 5-cylinder engine in the 850.

I'd go for it. I have a friend who bought a late 80s Volvo for $200, and drives it everywhere. It is a really good car! Of course he is mechanically inclined (more so than I am) but with more than 200,000 miles, it out-lived my 1988 Reliant that only had 155,000 on it.

(Actually, the Reliant wasn't all that bad. The fan blower motor decided to randomly work, and the transmission would occaisionally drop out of gear. Other than that, it was still running just fine.)

5 cylinders?! Bwahaha!
Actually, 5-cylinder engines are quite smooth and are a great compromise when more power than a 4-cylinder is needed but where an inline 6-cylinder won't fit.

I've got the same car except it's an 88. I just hit 80K miles last month! I don't drive much. Do you know what is done for the 90K mile service. My headliner is 1/2 gone, I found a place to buy a replacement, but I don't know how to install it.

Nitpick ?

You are posting assumptions, not facts, I abhor people who give "So called advice" when it is not based on facts, the labor to repair either FWD or RWD is the same.

You might want to have someone look at that stick up your ass.

But ok, sure since you're so hell bent on being right, drop the FWD part from my statement then. Happy?

I'm still pretty sure parts are cheaper and easier to find for RWD volvos over FWD ones. Labor I don't really care to argue but I don't think I'm wrong.

'Square, stop arguing. Volvo parts are expensive. Doesn't matter if its an 80's 700 series or a 90's 800 series. Perhaps labor might be a bit more but either way you'll pay when it goes to the mechanic. That said, I finally replaced my powersteering line today. Wore a nice hole right through the old on:|

The funny thing is that a dealership right down the street from my dad's is selling the EXACT same 850 GLT with 100K miles on it for 11 grand... once my dad works out the final price on the car, i will be all over this one 😛
