Any Vista Guide For Performance?

I just use Vista on my Game box so I don't need a gazillion services and things running, so I've been on Google looking for some Vista tweaks to free this thing up so it's not hogging up so much ram at startup.

Anyone know a good Vista performance/tweaks guide to really make these things fly?

THANKS

if you have 2gb or better of ram dont worry about it. the services running dont hurt your gaming experience.

You do realize it only "hogs" about 150MB more ram than XP did at startup, about 80% of which is due to DWM - which incidentally is disabled when playing games full screen. The reason it "looks" like it's hogging all your ram is SuperFetch, which after about a week has enough information to intelligently cache your typical usage patterns on the machine, which then you'll notice Vista actually running faster overall than XP did when it comes to loading apps and data.

If you really really want that 150MB back, turn off Aero.

If you're worried about gaming performance, then you need to blame infantile drivers, which this issue won't be resolved for about a year or so.

Take SunnyD's post into consideration and also read BD2003's sticked Vista thread at the top of this forum.

Vista Performance Guide

1. Install Vista
2. Leave the system alone, just start using your programs.
3. ...
4. Profit?

A radio station I listen to does a computer show once a week. Last week they mentioned http://speedyvista.com/

One of the host on the show said that site was BlackViper's. I don't know if he was right or not. If you go to BlackViper.com you will see he has his site working again but hasn't updated it much.

If there was anything tangible to gain by disabling services, I'd certainly have included it in my guide. But there isn't. So just let them be, unless you like pain.

Leave it alone. Vista is fine with resources. And as others have said, Aero gets turned off when running a game.

Nah it's a matter of Geek pride, anyways, you don't just leave things that you don't need.

This is coming from a Unix/Linux background where you install, compile and setup a kernel and system for what you need, not one size fits all, real Unix geeks that is, otherwise the newbies just install and away they go...
