Any Virus that prevents using CDRWs ?

A friend of mine using Win Me was victim of a virus atack, he told me he cannot use the CDRW to backup before format, cannot use the internet and cannot know what is the virus, maybe if I can know I can help him find some tool to remove it.

By the symptoms I described any of you can guess anything ? Thanks Gustavo.-
