I know she needs a 1/2 size violin but other than that i dont have a clue on what to look for. like brand, type of wood, accessories. what is the difference between a red and ebony violin, any pointers would be appreciated.

You need to find a teacher, who can then direct you to what you should buy/rent

honestly, at that age, I wouldn't invest too much into it. THe upgrades in the future will matter more anyways if she continues with it..

1/2 is like a foot and a half long

I wouldn't look too hard into this one. If he continues playing and you finally get to the full size ones, then you probably should do more research. This violin you buy will be only good for 1 or 2 years before he grows.

yep... I play the cello, my brother plays the violin... if there's one general rule to go by, the more expensive violins are more expensive for a reason. generally speaking, you would want a pernambuco wood violin bow, but for a beginner, that's probably not necessary. Type of wood doesn't matter as much as how good the violin sounds. If it sounds good with balsa wood, then it's a good violin (although balsa wood would be fragile). Try to find the balance between price and quality. Get a teacher first who can then try out violins that you take out from the store to try out for yourself. The teacher will be able to tell which ones are good, as you obviously cannot (since you don't play instruments). If your violin shop has a trade-in policy, then buying a violin is also a good choice, although it's all situational really. I would not buy any instrument online. Always try out th einstrument before buying it. The store should allow you to take it out for a week or two. PM me for other questions :)

If you just wanna give it as a toy sort of thing... then get a shoulder rest/sponge, a violin, rosin, a bow, and a case.

for the short of it, for a beginner it is best to either
1.) rent
2.) get a cheap factory made violin (ie brands like suzuki, twinkle)
the cheap ones come in sets which include everything they need to start playing and learning for around 150~200.

spending a lot on a first violin = bad idea.

The question that needs to be answered is: Does she have a teacher yet? If not, thats the first step you need to take, before doing anything else. Buying a violin blindly for her before consultation with teacher = recipe for disaster

I agree with kumanchu. Most music stores will rent them to you fairly long term and that should give you enough time to find out if she is going to want to stick with it. When I first got into music, I started out with a rented clarinet in the grade school band. Good thing it was rented because I stuck with it for a while, but just didn't enjoy playing it. I did like music and band though so I tried drums (provided by the school) and then went on to learn other instruments that my parents did buy later on once I knew I liked them and wanted to stick with them.

Check out Stradivarius. Reasonable quality. All things considered, your little treasure is gonna quite in no time at all anyway.

agreed... doesnt matter what violin she gets now, she won't be good enough to take advantage of a higher quality violin. By the time she's good enough for it to make a difference she'll need a fullsize.

I've played since I was 5yo

If you're looking for a good beginner instrument my dad has probably 50 of them, & he'll charge a hell of a lot less than a music store will.

If you want to talk to him I can give you his cell phone number, he works with a local school district here doing instrument repairs & also sells a decent number of beginner level instruments. They are definitely beginner stuff, but far better than the painted chinese junk music stores have. They won't be as shiny or pretty (amazing the flame an airbrush can produce) but they will sound a lot better.

as echoed here, go cheap, or rent

look at playability number 1, for anything less than fullsize

when she gets to fullsize, that's when you want to shop extensively...and it could be a pretty hefty investment if she gets good :)

I have two I haven't played in a while. one is 2Gs the other 6Gs, but I haven't played them in a long time and I don't know if I should keep them. It is sad because I wa quite good when I was a kid (I started playing at 5 and was in the Youth Symphony at 7), but I had no work ethic, so it atrophied by the time I was in Middle School.

My suggestion is to find a teacher first that can refer you.
