Any Vacation Suggestions?

Any suggestions on where I should go to vacation with my gf (from July 14 (evening)-July 17th)? I'm from the Philadelphia area, but I can't really decide where to go with such a short period of time. Some places I was thinking of was Virginia Beach (but it's a bit of a drive, I'm worried it might be tiring), Florida (don't know if 3 days is really worth the cost of the flight), Las Vegas (just worried I might gamble too much), and Jersey Shore (too close, can go there on regular weekends without taking time off work).

Any ideas?

oh btw, I'm 25, and I don't really drink alot, though I do drink. I like casinoes, but I don't know how much my gf will enjoy the trip if I spend all day in a casino.

I'm not going to go anywhere that requires flying or is a longer drive than 6 hours. I'm leaning toward Jersey or Delaware shore OR VA beach with a stop in between. Anyone been to Rahobeth (spelling?)? A lot of my co-workers go there. How is that?

VA Beach is about 6.5 hours from where you are, perhaps 5 if you're lucky...I'd suggest somewhere closer, if you're only gone for three days.

Upstate NY might be nice...

How is Ocean City, MD? So what is there to do there? I've seen pictures, but from that it seemed pretty much the same as New Jersey's Ocean City. We really liked VA Beach last time we went... clean, neat shops to visit, cheap, biking, rollerblading... but 12 hours (6 hours each way) of driving seems a bit much for a little more than 2 days of fun.

I haven't been there in many, many years (remember when there was medical waste washing up in NJ? We went to MD and NC instead), but most of my friends in their mid-20s seem to love it as it has a great social atmosphere and lots to do. There is a key difference between OC, NJ and OC, MD - Alcohol, which you cannot purchase in OC, NJ. Therefore, you'll find the one in MD to be closer to Sea Isle City - more college age folks, more drinking, more dancing, more nightlife. Less strollers and screaming children.

Go to Myrtle Beach, SC and miniature-golf yourself to death.

I was thinkin about Myrtle Beach too, how far is that from Philly? How's the boardwalk and beach, I just don't like the Jersey shore too much beacuse it's dirty.

Do you mean by the Niagra Falls area? What are some of the sites and places to visit in upstate NY?

What beach in Jersey do you go to that's dirty???? 😕

Myrtle Beach is farther than VA beach - 8 hours if you make good time, although you can get pretty cheap flights there from AC Int'l.

I've honestly been to beaches in almost every east cost state south of New York and they are pretty much all the same. Some places are better for surfing, some better for socializing, some better for golfing, etc, but one thing that hardly changes are boardwalks and the beaches themselves.

Jersey beaches smell funny to me for some reason. They have, however, come a long way from 10 years ago though. Those rusty pipes I see on the AC beach make me uneasy.

What's a good beach for surfing? I've always wanted to try that.

Well....how many other beaches have you been to?

AC IS dirty, but you don't go to the beach in AC, you stick to the casinos. If you want to be on the beach, you go other places than AC!

The rest of the state (except maybe Wildwood and Seaside which are often as nasty as AC) smells like...beach. Rotting mollusks and seaweed that washed ashore.

I've been to Brigantine, Ocean City, and Sea Isle City. I liked Brigantine, but there isn't much to do other than lie on the beach. I think it may be psychological more than anything. It may be the rotting mollusks and seaweed that I smell. At VA beach, Cancun, and Bahamas (past vacations when I had more money and time), all I've smelled is the salt/sea water in the air.

Newport, Rhode Island. Go see the mansions. I don't know if it deserves 3 days... but definitely something of a weekend vacation. We went when it was still cold so we didn't hit the beach there, but you can definitely take advantage of that too...

ok I have to step away. I'll check more on responses tonight. Keep em coming. Thanks for the suggestions so far!!!

But have you been to other beaches in other states? They smell the same 🙂
NM saw your edit 😉

Brigantine is pretty much as good as it gets in NJ, although I prefer deserted, trash-free beaches. It's close enough to AC that if I wanted to do something else, I could just cruise across the bridge and do it 🙂

Surfing is pretty good in NC, but that's a hike. I don't recall the waves in OC MD, but I think there are spots that are more than adequate for a beginner.

Honestly, when you're just getting started, there are places most anywhere that have a little bit of break where you can learn to surf.

That's a long-ass drive from Philly... I drove to Buffalo for school from NY all the time... and it was 7 hours almost (I guess not bad for a few days' getaway). There's Niagara Falls up there, the Canadian border is a tourist attraction with clubs - Clifton Hill... and you can definitely hit Toronto from there. That'd be a nice vacation too.

Just got home.

You guys got me thinking... maybe I stop somewhere for a day before going to VA beach, Anyone know a good place to go to (other than the obvious DC and Baltimore, she doens't want to go there) between Philly and VA?

Another idea is to go to Brigantine and cross the bridge if we want to do Boardwalk stuff. However we tried this before and it's too much of a hassle, to go back and forth. What we really want is a clean beach that has a fun/interesting boardwalk.

I'm still open to other ideas though, we do like the beach, but we don't want to just sit around the beach all day, some place with activities would be nice (that was the only thing I dind't like about Brigantine).

Well I gotta go to dinner. I'll check back again tonight.

The gorges at Letchworth State park (aka Grand Canyon of the northeast) are pretty amazing. It's about an hour south of Rochester and if you're driving to Buffalo/Niagra Falls it's not far out of the way. Also, if you're heading to Toronto, Rochester JUST got a fast ferry (maiden voyage was this week in fact) that you could take on the way there or the way back if you wanted to save a few hours (I assume you only need to see Niagra Falls one way).

From Philly to Letchworth, it'd be about 5 hours.
