Hey there,

I'm a rising sophomore majoring in Industrial Engineering. Was thinking of transferring to Umich/Virginia Tech from Northeastern University since I don't think NEU is a good fit for me and Umich/Virginia Tech have great programs. I'd appreciate it if you guys could answer the following questions:

1) Do these schools have ethnic diverse student bodies? Are there a lot of international students?
2) How much work would these schools involve? As an engineering major, would transferring make it hard for me to keep up?
3) I am planning to apply for transfer in the Spring 09 ( January onwards ).. Will that affect my chances of getting in as a transfer? Are there any disadvantages of transferring during the Spring?
4) Would you recommend your school? What are the disadvantages?
5) Coming from NU which is a coop school, have you gone on coop/internship in your school? How hard/easy was it to get it?

Thanks much.

Cheers
Jai

Umich:

1) Yes
2) I don't know how much work you're expecting, but I would say IOE has the reputation of being the "easiest" engineering major.
3) Don't know
4) Yes, you will have to pay a lot in out of state tutition
5) Yes, easy

It's also kind of hard to tell since he does not explain why he thinks NEU is not a good fit. BTW, op, did prof. Freeman and her up beat perky attitude (and poor grading scheme) just piss you off?

Could you please elaborate on what internships/coops did you get and did you apply for them through college fairs?

Yes, I have heard that IOE is the "easiest" engineering major.. But as long as I have time to fit in dinner and gym every weeknight and time to go partying on fri/sat night, I'd be happy!

Gibson, check pm :p

Well I'm in a unique situation since I grew up outside of Ann Arbor but actually attend VT.
(my answers will be for VT)

1) Tons, actually most of my friends were Turks
2) Engineering at the school is topnotch and requires an equal amount
3) Chances are better transferring during Spring vs. Fall
4) I loved VT, but if you're into big cities, blacksburg is not that... nor are there any in close range (Roanoke is the closest thing to a big city)
5) N/A

US News & World Report - Undergrad Industrial Engineering Rankings

Another vote for Georgia Tech (fyi I was CMPE not IE). Anyway, to answer your questions:
1. GT has a large international student population and has a diverse student body (expect for a abysmally low African-American population - less than 6% iirc).

2. GT is not an easy school, but IE is somewhat easier than other programs like Chem, Mech or EE. If you take a lower class load in the first semester, you'll be set.

3. Not that I know of. You should email the ISYE dept. just to be sure.

4. Good: in Midtown Atlanta, so there's lots to do nearby.
Bad: In Midtown Atlanta, so traffic is fucked up.
Bad: In Midtown Atlanta, so rent/parking on parking is pricey. Damn you GT Parking!!!
Good: Respected engineering program.
Great: Very very good coop/intern program.
Bad: Guy:Girl ratio is 7:3. However, out of that 3, only 0.2 are worth dating (and hence unavailable), 0.3 are cool, and the remaining 2.5 are, er, undesirable, and suffer from TBS

5. Answered above.

I was considering GT but I don't really want to move to the south. I like the weather here in the north.. Grew up in south-like weather and I prefer the drastic change of seasons in the north. I especially love the snow when I don't have to drive in it ( i'm wierd I know :p )

Thanks for the responses. :) Anyone else out there who might know more about the transfer process or the coop/internship program?

Cheers

In response to what toekramp has posted.

1. Bahahahhaahaha. You ....!
2. Hence neither toekramp nor I could actually get an engineering degree.
3. Dunno.
4. True, very true but its still a fun all college town.
5. Well I got an internship at Morgan Stanley through the bizschool @ VT. So I think they are pretty good at that

I can be more hippy-ish, sure, but that's one blanketing statement there. You've still got the entire athletic and greek life on campus so if you want to do keg stands, beer bongs and play beer pong every night, you still have that available.

Just don't feed the homeless.
