ATI to ship hundreds of thousands of Pentium 4 chipsets
NVIDIA IS not ready with its next generation Intel integrated chipset. The chip codenamed C60 is expected to come out in late Q4, if Nvidia is lucky or even before, if the things take the different turn.
Therefore Intel was talking with its strategic cross licensing partner ATI and gave those guys the chance to earn some money from its chipset business unit. ATI will end up in many Intel low end graphic boards and you can expect many OEM systems.
It's a very simple story, ATI will replace all 915 designs with its Xpress 200 motherboards and for the first time you might even have a chance to play some games on those integrated boards.
We told you in a separate part why Intel dropped out of the market and to refresh your memory it did it before it was not earning much money, it wants to give other vendors a chance as it killed the third party vendor market with its Centrino "Platform" and because 915 are not fully Vista capable - it's as simple as that.
We believe that even Dell might get some massive orders as Dell had 915 and recent Intel roadmaps seen by the INQ implied that Intel will stop the production of all 915 based boards as soon as Q4 2005, pretty much in the next month or two.
So overnight ATI is becoming the largest integrated chipset player, and this is definitely a great thing for this business unit. Nvidia did expect that ATI will become a serious chipset player at some point but it didn?t expect that it will take most of its integrated business at one stroke. Nvidia stalled on Intel chipset side and it is now paying the price for that.
ATI, on the nother hand, is pumping out hundreds of thousands of chipsets and these numbers are soon to reach the millions, as there is a huge demand for low cost integrated stuff. As soon as Intel drops out with 915, the only choice you will have are Xpress 200 and some Via and SIS boards. Nvidia's C60, possibly named Geforce 6150 for Intel is coming out later at a time still to be announced.
The margins are not great in the integrated chipset business but we are sure that ATI might earn some of it, otherwise it would not make much sence just to be there and make the losses. When I think about it, it happened before but you can earn some cents if not dollars if you do the job right. µ
