Any truth to the rumor about a new model of iPhone in January?

Just curious. We don't currently have AT&T in my area, but they bought a Midwest cell company that owns a local franchise and the deal is supposed to be finalized by December. I was planning to finally pick one up once the deal went through, but a guy I was talking to that got one out of state and just uses it in roaming mode up here said there is supposed to be a new model coming out in January, so to wait for that one.

There is a lot of talk about a "2nd Gen" coming out in the near term. Apple hasn't confirmed anything obviously.
If I had to guess the update would most likely only be on the capacity side. 16GB or 32GB perhaps. Also maybe 3G support?
Maybe a few new features in software.

Again these are just guesses.

It would make sense, and I am holding out for a second-gen iPhone. I'd like to see 3G, built-in GPS, voice-activated dialing, and a user-replaceable battery, among other things (though I know the last is almost certainly not going to occur).

they might do the same thing as with the first iPhone, announce in Jan and release in June/July? Hm, thinking about it that would just cannibalize current iPhone sales.

The fact that they are releasing the current iPhone hardware to Europe leads me to believe an update might not be until 1 year from now (q3-4 08), especially since 3G is much more prevalent over there.

Nah, we aren't gonna get a user replaceable battery. That's a cash cow for Apple.

They're going to have to go 3G and frankly the lack of voice dialing is frustrating to say the least.

Isn't it a requirement that cell phones as of some year in the recent past must include some sort of GPS hardware. Wouldn't this allow for potential future software upgrades that access it? =/

I wouldn't buy a 3G iPhone right now given the current technology available (or in 6 months for that matter). The battery life would be too inferior.

I don't think they'll release one in January. They never release new models that quickly. Middle of next year might be possible, though. I just hope whatever software updates they put in a new model they make available to first gen users.
