Any truth to that "Mars Closer Than Ever" claim?

My Dad got an e-mail that said Mars would reach its peak proximity to the Earth around August 13th. We're pretty close to that, and yet I notice nothing. Especially weary because the e-mail said Mars would become as visible and as large as the moon. It just doesn't make sense in my head. Wondering what the concensus was around here.

that email == BS.

do some simple math and find out. Even if earth was directly aligned with mars, it would still appear many many times smaller than the moon.

Yep, I remember. Even added more fuel to my disbelief.

Yep, that too.
