Any truck owners here use CAI?

Purchased and 05 Silverado and have read on some of the other forums that the CAI/Exhaust combo does in fact assist in throttle response, slight increase in power and minimal increase in mileage per gallon...any of you have these? If so which ones?

The GM model is very very expensive...I guess the name and GM brand is what you are paying for.

Some of the others I have seen mentioned are Volant, K&N..etc.

Merry Christmas.

I doubt you will notice a big gain.
And DON'T use K&N or any other oil type filter. They are junk and can cause engine damage.

I do not think the GM one uses oil, it is high dollar though. I do like the idea of throttle response increase.

And I will admit, I like a little rumble in a truck...not obnoxious..but a little rumble in a V8 🙂

My friend got a K&N Intake and Magnaflow (I think?) Exhaust on his '07 Silverado and noticed quite a bit more response than stock.

'cold air intakes' are very rarely such. often they remove a stock snorkle going into the fender and replace it with an open filter in the engine compartment- that would be a warm air intake.

exhaust might be a little more productive.

^^^ i think you're thinking of SHORT RAM AIR INTAKES or whatever they might be called.

the CAI on my car runs away from the motor down into the fender/wheel well area.

That's true, but what he's saying is that most products marketed as "cold air intakes" are actually short ram intakes, which generally take in more warm air than the stock setup.

Most people that see anything with some tubing and a cone-style filter instantly (mistakenly) think CAI, so they buy it expecting massive power gains (lol).

Biggest things you can do for throttle repsonse on yours is a TPS mod and removal of the throttle body blade shroud ( I am assuming you have the 5.3, maybe 4.8 with a throttle body). I don't think you have an EGR return on that. If you do, there is a small mod that helps with response as well.

To get the BEST out of it....do a ECM tune (Predator, PCMforless, etc...) and remove torque management.

If you're going to go the exhaust route, might as well go with LT headers (or shorties if you would prefer), crossover with true duals. Catback is good for sound and not much else. You'll lose a little low end torque and gain a bit (but not much at all) high end HP.

Proper CAI's do that but a lot of kids refer to their new "intake" as cold air even though it's just a small filter housing 6 inches away from their actual motor. I think that's more what he's referring to.

I wouldn't be surprised if less reputable part manufactures referred to their intakes as "cold air" even if they aren't, for sales sake.

^This. You want better performance/throttle response, get a tune.

I was reading about the blackbear performance tunes. Quite impressive.

I'm partial to PCMforless because they also help people out who tune on their own for free on the hptuners forums, but the best you can find for your dollar 🙂

What part of the country are you in?

+1 to PCMforless.

Those dudes can be real helpful and know their stuff. If you were close to NC, I would say drive your vehicle there and let them do a dyno tune.

One thing I never understood. If a relatively inexpensive CAI can increase power AND mpg, why don't all cars come with them stock?

Induction noise increases and most people want quiet cars.

not necessarily in the high performance segment esp when talking trucks.

My dad's 408 96 Bronco has a K&N setup that's heat sheilded and gets air from the bumper.

Adds a growl under acceleration and picked up a bit of HP and TQ on the dyno. Also looks much better under the hood.
