Probably the last Dr. Tom book I read was Hunt For Red October after seeing the butcherized Hollywood version on the big screen. I picked up The Bear and The Dragon a few days back at the airport.

It seems to be a bit slow in development, and the Russian names really slow down my reading, but all in all a thumbs up...although I'm only about 3/4 of the way through it, I hope the action picks up a bit, or I may have to change my rating of it.

But I did get a new sig from the book....see below.

i bought "Rainbow Six" a couple days ago. Goddam damn what am I doing buying a book thats 900 pages long....

anyways it seems pretty good so far. it's the first "action" novel i've ever read. I'm used to reading books with like meaning and crap, but I don't see this book doing that. but im sure it will be a good read.

The Bear And The Dragon paperback version is 1137 pages :Q Plus having to stop and think every 2 pages to remember who is who in the Russian area.

My favorite clancy book is definately executive orders. Its long but its very interesting. It stood out amongst his other books because the focus wasn't really on russian/us relations as much.

I just finished The Bear and the Dragon. Interesting concept, but I really doubt that the Russians would doing what Clancey has them doing in that book. Stranger things have happened though.

Oh yeah, learned tons of stuff.

Makes me want to read some of his non-fiction books that were mentioned in the back of the paperback. Anyone ever read one of those??

Did you learn more than you ever wanted to know?

What do you mean, exactly? ;) I don't know if you should have to post a spoiler warning . . . would they not join NATO, or not defend their resources?

I would have thought he meant Russia accepting help and admitting any weakness to another nation.

clancy books are my guilty pleasure. the dialogue can be cheesey, the descriptions long winded, and the characters are about as 1 dimensional as a straight line... but i've still read all of his fiction (except the latest one, which i intend to pick up after i finish the current stack of books i'm working on). my dad has read his other ones that are collaborations with other authors (net force, op center, some other junk)... he said they suck, but i haven't heard any other opinions. anyway, point is: clancy's awesome, but get a don delillo book jacket so no one knows you're reading it :p (j/k, i really don't care if anyone sees me reading clancy, i usually tear through them in 2-3 days, tops)

They would never join NATO. First of all western Europe wouldn't want them and most importantly Like SLuggo said it would make them admit they are VERY weak. I thought the way the CIA was getting information was pretty cool.

Well, kinda. I've read The Hunt For Red October, and Red Storm Rising. I enjoyed both very much. I've started Rainbow Six, but I can't get into it. I'm pretty sure I'd be better off reading some of the others first, but I don't know the sequencing of the stories. As I understand it, most of them are written like a series, with each new book building upon the previous one.

Can someone help me figure out which to pick up next?

I picked up the new one a few days ago. Red Rabbit is pretty good. I was wondering where he was going to go after The Bear And The Dragon, and now I know. He went back in time. :D

His best book so far, IMHO, has to be the Sum of All Fears, then Rainbow6, EO is a distant third. BTW hollywood bastardized the SOaF, the book is 100x more suspenseful.

A hard read (Dragon and Bear) but well worth it as are all his books. Have "Red Rabbit" sitting on my desk right now but havent started it yet.

Sorry about your sig but I brought that quote up in a thread as soon as I read the book. Others have used it also :)
Enjoy it though as it is quite fitting.

I read the Bear and the Dragon months ago and loved it!
As with all Tom Clancy books, you must get through the first 200-300 pages to get to the good stuff!
The last 400 pages of the book are real page turners.
