Any tips for increasing dial-up speed?

Yes, it sucks, I'm still on 56k dial up. Any registry tweaks or software that can dramatically increase speed?

Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do as far as I know. Unless you are getting extremely slow speeds from your 56K (ie connecting at only 33.6 or so) you really can't do much. I generally connect at 49333 or 45666, both of which are quite good for dial-up, but they pretty much depend upon the condition of your phone line. If you are unlucky enough to have a noisy line, then you're pretty much stuck with connect speeds around 33600.

Well as far as download speeds go, you will only be able to go so fast, but you can always check to see if your modem and ISP support v.92 which has some new features which includes faster upload (I think). There's no way to make a modem reach DSL, cable or even ISDN speeds..if you really want faster speeds you should spring for broadband, I think it's worth it.

go here -- click me and try to look for dialup accelerator type of thing..... some supposedly can boost the performance, but it all depends on your hardware and isp...

also GhettoFob mentioned about v92 technology, which is something new... unfortunately my modem is too old already, and i don't feel like spending extra bucks to get it run a little faster than it is right now....

broadband is a good option if you've got the resources... isdn is not really worth it, but that's just my opinion :)

Make Google your home page. It's completely text based (no picture ads, just text) and is by far the best search engine. Your connection will feel MUCH faster, especially when you find what you want on the first page of search results.

Make sure you run your phone line directly into your computers modem, then have your phone/answering machine run off the modem port and not vis versa. This may help keep your line noise down to a minimum.

When I used my 3Com external modem, I once read that you can chain two together (if you have two phone lines) and nearly double the speed...don't know anything about it, though.

...I would suggest a cable modem to improve your speed ;)

Helpless is right, thats a feature of win98 and later. You need two logins at your isp as well

Dramatic improvements? I doubt you will find dramatic, but there are several sites that have tweaks and registry hacks that will improve you connections rate.

www.windrivers.com
www.tweak3d.net
www.speedguide.net
www.regedit.com

just look for the links for the modem
Sometimes changing your modem to another brand or chipset will help. I had a Zoom PCI and would connect at 44,000. I learned that my ISP used 3Com equipment so I changed to the US RObotics PCI 5610 and now connect at 49,333. The tweaks will help in your throughtput while on the web.
Here is a site that will gauge your throughput

If you notice Helpless's post, he's actually refering to Diamond's Shotgun technology, which is basically 2 56k modems in 1. If you have 2 phone lines and an ISP that supports it you have get 112k...
