Any Tips For File Management?

With storage prices getting cheaper each week I know there are many users with several hundred gigs of data on one or more computers. I've got 3 machines with a little over 800 gigs total and find myself running into duplication where files or programs are stored in several places.

I've got my files backed up so managing 1 extra copy is expected - not a problem, but I am interested to know how others keep track of thousands of files without wasting space and losing track of duplicates? Image files and MP3's are the most difficult to keep track of because I often edit the originals and end up with several files. Clean up afterwards is the key, but I'm not always ready to delete the ones partially finished and end up with tons of thumbnails of the same image in different stages.

Yes, I have multiple partitions on all my drives.
