In retrospect, from your experiences in school, is there anything you would've done differently? or anything you found helped you out.

I'm taking a year off from school currently and a few of my buddies who went straight to uni are finding the transition tough, and haven't been pulling off the best grades...trying to prep as best as I can.

stock up on home made food and then put it in the freezer...and then when you think you are missing home food, just put about 50mlof water in a pan and boil, then add the chunk of your home made food

(that's what i do... 😀 )

If you don't have a car, makes friends with someone who has one.
If you're not old enough to buy alcohol, make friends with someone who is.
Ignore all drugs, alcohol, and chicks.
Study. A lot.

Pick 2.

I say go ther and enjoy your time.. its one of the best experiences you will ever have intellectually romanticly and socially. Oh one more thing find some thing you like doing and persue that, if you go into a major b/c "thats where the money is at" you will find out later that its hard to get good grades if you feel that your major is uninteresting.

also realise that profs are people too, you can talk to them get to know them and ask for advice (just dont pester them) and you will see that your grade might be a bit higher than what you expected.

Use your career center ... its there for a reason.
Join a Club, great way to meet people.

Networking is important you never know if "that one guy i met while watching the bears game" turns out to be a Hiring manager or your boss or even better your bosses boss.

i got more but its much better if you find out for yourself, best by trial and error. The best 5 years of my life 🙂

That works just about everywhere. 😀

But what if that guy fvcked the bosses wife?! :Q

Yes, I've got some tips. DO NOT DO WHAT I DID.
I started university right out of HS and I slacked off big time. I ended up getting kicked out after the third term and spent the next 10 years taking a class or two, then taking a term or two off, then taking a class or two again. And even during the times I was taking classes, I was fvcking them up.
I eventually managed to get my act together and get my degree 10 years later with a really crappy GPA and a useless degree. Since I couldn't find a job, I decided to get a different degree at a different university. This time was different. I worked my butt off and got a degree in Computer Science in two years and graduated with honors. Now I'm pretty happy and I'm making a good living as a software developer.

The one biggest regret I have in my life is slacking off and taking so many years to finally start a career. Even though things are good in my life now, I can't help but wonder where I could have been at this age if I had started my career in 1992 instead of 2001. Have a lot of fun in college, but don't let it get in the way of getting your degree in a timely manner. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that you can still have fun after you join the working world and it's a lot easier when you've got the money to spend.

Cliff's Notes for the lazy:
Work hard, get your degree early, and start your career while you are still young. Otherwise you may regret it.

take your time and enjoy it. Looking back it seems so easy to get the grades that I got with minimal effort. If you want to go to grad school you have to decide early and apply effort in your grades. Peer pressure is a b!tch in college and studing is not the popular. Find a healty balence and drink alot when you can. Plus never go to the first day (only applies to semesers/quarters after the first one), they only pass out the sylabus and if you don't go you get and extra day of vacation.

Do your best to get along with your roommate. It REALLY sucks coming back to your dorm room after a long day and having to deal with roommate issues when you just want to relax.

And unlike this guy, pay attention in your English classes. :Q

Yeah, and if you MUST screw the chick in your dorm room, try to keep it down. If you can't be quiet, at least let your roomate watch and take pics.

Don't drink too much.
Don't ride with someone who has.
Alway use a condom.
Don't smoke--anything!!
No drugs.

Inspite of not following any of those rules I survived college. But when you look back in 30 years, God it's been 30 years, I was a fool for the things we did.

Make sure the registrar isnt screwing you over. If you assume administration knows what they are doing since they get paid a lot, think again 😉

I got screwed over by registrar for their "typographical errors", and lack of knowledge.

Booze are bad, Women are evil and if its mechanical it will break. Don't be afraid to ask for some help if you don't understand something. NEVER settle.

hit up some frat parties, make friends with similar interests that are outgoing.

transition on school work shouldn't be that bad.
You go to like 2 lectures a week per class, (at my school) and basically it's upto you to do the work.

Get into a field that you enjoy. Do not major in something solely for the money. In time you will find that job satisfaction will far outweigh a large paycheck. Many people do something for the money, then hate their life because they hate their job.

Spend more time than playing games and DLing pron.

In all seriousness. What you do in the next 4 years will effect the rest of your life.

PRIORITIZE NOW!
1) FAMILY
2) SCHOOL (grades)
3) everything else.

Personally I think going to a Uni is a waste of time strait out of high school, Community Colleges are the way to go. But here are some general tips

On school:

Sit upfront in class.
Get to know your professors and TAs
Get an advisor and check up with them 2 times a qtr or semester
Take notes and buy notes if you can
Check out the learning/writing centers

On Partying:

Don't drink the bong water
Never pass out first
Never play that game where to trace patters on people's faces (It's a trap)
Know you limit
Don't mix too many drugs and one time
If it's organic don't panic

On Girls

Don't be a slut, especially around sorority girls (they will black ball you)
If a girl gives you her body WALK HER HOME!
Unlike most of the guys on the board Stalking is never a good idea.

There is always a large number of people with nothing to do, looking for someone to do it with. It's easy to think that no one every does any work. But since you don't see the people at the library or studying in a non-public place, you get fooled.

Learn very quickly not to be swayed by people who want you to go do something with them, instead of the schoolwork you need to do. Many of them won't be around in a year or two because they failed out. I still remember the guy freshman year who spent the whole year demanding that the rest of us on the floor need to party more. Funny guy, really nice... but he failed out. He took two other guys with him, basically, since they lacked the willpower to say no.

If you need to work part-time, think about how to set up your schedule so it can work out easier. If you have a couple hours between each class, that's not enough time to go to a job. If you can condense them, you'll have more flexible options for working.

Learn how to manage three things: your time, your money, and your social life.

Ask for help if you need it.

Explore as many extracurricular activities as you have time for. Many won't appeal to you but some will, and you'll stick with and really enjoy those. Too many people hook up with the same exact activities they did in HS, never exploring anything else.

If you go to an expensive school and if you can manage it, see if you can finish in three years. Just look at the amount of money you will save.

Get out and meet people, and be yourself.

Oh, hit the career development center immediately! Get co-ops or internships or whatever. GET REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE!

Also, do not take time off. It's lazy and a waste of time and money.

Enjoy it while you can. These are going to be the best 4 years of your life.

If the greek system is strong. Join a frat. I wish I did. Almost did and it's one of my biggest regrets.
