Any tips/deals for saving on car rentals?

I'm going to rent a car in August and was looking at some ways I could save on car rentals... So far I've found that you can save 20% off by signing up to travelocity's preferred member deal, but somehow think there may be even cheaper/better deals out there? Does AAA offer any discounts to car rentals?

I was thinking about getting a convertible or SUV/Minivan (big backseat heheehe), but would also just be happy with a standard car, nothing fancy... Any ideas would be appreciated. 😀

how about enterprise? sign up for their email, you should receive some coupons. Oh, fatwallet can help you.

don't rent from the airport. Reserve a smaller car, chances are they don't have one and you get a free bump in size.

There are discount coupons in the Entertainment book (if you have one in your area) for different rental places. AAA has discounts with Hertz. Most places charge a lot for "fancy" cars (convertibles may fall into that category).

Watch for the extra fees they want to tack on - PAI/PEI/LDW, etc. Plus you have "concession fees", "recoupment fees" and other things that aren't in the base price, but add up to a lot more.

Nope, don't have a military ID although I do have a DoD badge since I work on a military base! Probably wouldn't fly though, huh?

I tried Hotwire, and their prices weren't as good as travelocity's...

If I don't rent from the airport, how am I supposed to get the car when I land? Do they have shuttles to the car rental places if they are located away from the airport?

Thanks for the Hertz info. I'll see how much it will be if I have a AAA membership as well...

Take a taxi there, airport's are significantly more expensive

That's correct, they charge airport taxes.

You could try budget.com. Their website have some kinda weekly deals or weekend deals. Make sure you have insurance coz is you accept their insurance it would just ruin the whole rental deal.
