Any tips/advice on a poker tournament?

Having my 2nd annual tourny. 10-16 people.. not for money of course. Any tips on rules? Like min ante, etc. Anyone with experience. This isn't just poker night. Its a poker tourny.

mmmm...what format? Or is that up in the air too? Say, if you're playing texas hold'em, you generally have a max bet for each progression, so say 5, 10, 25...other than that, I'd say just to ask the players what they want, you can generally get a feel for the room...otherwise you might make some people mad or disappointed with rules that they didn't agree to.

good luck!

yeah, format is sitll up in the air. last year we did 5 card.. which worked untill the final table.. there was no min bet, so the last game went on for a while. and i'll have the rules set before we play. I was thinking 7 card, cuz its a bit tougher then 5. Its fun as hell though.

As the great one said:

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

I'd play texas hold'em or omaha with progressive limits and blinds - the limits keep people from getting frustated with being forced out early, and the blinds will keep things moving at the end.

I totally agree here. For a friendly tournament, you definitely want to set progressive limits so that players can't force each other out by going all in. Everyone has to ante, and then setup blinds on the two spots left of the dealer button. On the final table, set the max bet pretty high, otherwise it can drag out. Fortunately you can use the ante, blind bet, and max bet format in any type of card game tournament. I'm partial to texas hold'em myself as the game moves quite a bit faster than 7 card stud.

you can't play poker for no money...

just make it low stakes - penny, nickel, quarter.

Trying to bluff with no stakes is just lame...

poker for no money? that is a sacrilege...that's like driving a ferrari 50 mph on the autobahn...

2 or 3 tables, winners of each table meet for an all out Omaha hold em or progressive round, first one out buys beer, second one pizza, third one beer, fourth one pizza...

Yup, I get a bit frustrated in our group sometimes, when we play this game there are a couple guys who are very aggressive and loose and they have no problem going all in for no reason/any reason, and since they are willing to lose a lot more money than me, it can get annoying. But it sure is fun though. 🙂
