any thoughts on what could be causing this problem?

every few hours, everything on my network just gets hit with a major slowdown that lasts for 3-4 minutes and then immediately clears.

it's not the end of the world if I'm just browsing the net, but I actually caused my entire raid to wipe in BWL the other night because of it 🙁

I've tried removing all other computers from the network (we've got 3 computers wired in... mine, my roommates, and the pvr) but the lag spikes keep happening. additionally, during a spike, I don't notice any increased usage in network activity when I go to task manager -> networking and there don't seem to be any applications eating up a lot of ram.

the first thing I checked was for either a virus or spyware, but both checks have come up clean except for some random cookies.

Just a guess.... maybe some automatic update utility or maintenance routine. .. would not show huge RAM footprint.

How consistent is the lag spike? it could be some thing like the AC kicking on and your equipment not getting enough power. kind of sounds like it maybe hardware related.
