Any theories on Newegg refurb?

My theory is: people who can't get a component working or don't like it, RMA it--
it's then tested and found to be OK, and ATI or whoever, sells them in bulk to Retailers.

This is my theory because I doubt that they 'fix' a GPU, for instance-- if it's really broke they just trash it.

Or, it's just an overstock whitebox to begin with.

Anyone have experience with the refurb components? Or any other theories?

It really depends on the reseller.
Refurbished products are quite often products that were returned for a reason other than being defective. Lets say you buy a stick of RAM from Newegg, but after you receive it you decide to go with a different brandor speed, or maybe you bought DDR2 instead of DDR. You return it to Newegg, pay the restocking fee, and Newegg then lists the item in it's refurbished section.

Then you have places like woot.com that do receive bulk shipments of refurbished items from a manufcturer and resell them.

I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing most/all of Newegg's refurbs are from products that were returned to them directly and Newegg is now stuck with them because they are not defective (so Newegg can't just return it to the manufacturer).

I've had mixed luck. Video cards about half I got, I had to send back. Same with memory, but then I RMA it to the MFG, and get new working memory. Motherboards ? Only got about 2, and they both worked. and an HSF. Was brand new.
