Cliff Notes First:
[*]Participated In A Usability Study For Microsoft
[*]Was Promised A Gratuity, Retail Cost $599.00
[*]Item Never Arrived
[*]Microsoft Said Shipped, Shipping Company Said Lost
[*]Shipping Company Demands Receipt Proving Cost
[*]Microsoft Refuses Receipt, States They Will Reship, IF I Fill Out A Second W9
[*]Filling Out A Second W9 Would Allow MS To Write Off Both Copies, Leaving Me Liable For Taxes On $1198.00
Okay, here is the deal, I participated in a Microsoft Exchange usability study in February. After a few weeks, I inquired as to the status of the gratuity and was told it had been shipped and signed for.
I checked the tracking information, and it did show that something had been shipped, but had no record of what was shipped or what address it was to be delivered to. The shipping company then declares the item as lost/stolen.
After weeks of back and forth with Microsoft, their gratuity coordinator contacts me and states that they will reship the item only if I fill out a second W9 form , which would put me above the IRS limits, requiring tax be paid on the total amount ($1198.00)
What I see from this, is that Microsoft plans to write off both parcels on their taxes, even though one is missing/never received, then expects me to foot the bill.
Yeah, yeah, I know, even if I pay the tax, I am still getting $599.00 worth of software cheap, but that is not the issue here...
The issue, as I see it, is that the MS usability group, had they actually shipped the item, would simply reship and then take matters up with the shipping company from their end. Their failure to do matters that way, leads me to believe that the item never shipped, and they are simply trying to get a tax break for two items when only one shipped...
