I've been in the hardware/software R & D business for about 6 years now & am looking for a possible career change. I am basically a lead technician in quality assurance.
It's been a good job, but I have found it to be a bit unreliable at times. As with many tech jobs out there, irregardless of how well I perform, I could walk in at any day and it could be my last. I'm still here while many of my co-workers are not, so I really can't complain too hard.
My main reason for looking at another field is simply because I am getting bored with "new" technology alone, which was what attracted me to this job in the first place. While it's kind of cool to be involved with the "cutting edge", I have found it to be a pretty impersonal experience overall.
I still have some interest in new technology, but I am looking for something where I can help and serve and "feel" needed... if that makes any sense.
So far in my research, It seems that I have really nailed what I am looking for as a Surgical Tech. (at least paper)
These are some of the traits described for Surgical Techs:
? A desire to serve others
? Ability to stand for extended periods of time
? Excellent hearing and sight
? Fluency in the English language- write, speak and understand.
? Ability to function safely, effectively, and calmly in stressful situations
? Basic science, such as biology, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology.
? Computer literacy
I have ZERO medical training at this point, but I am looking at an 11 month course that would start this summer, & would certify me for this position. I could then continue with further courses as time would permit if needed.
Does anyone have any background in this field that could lend me some pointers. Are there any snags I could otherwise avoid, if properly prepared? Does the job just plain suck? Any advise or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
