Any Supra Owners?

What are some good 87 to mid 90's Supra forums?

I'm thinking of buying an older Supra non turbo and fixing it up this summer, after this summer, I'll see what I'm going to do, but getting it turboed would definetly be an idea I have.

It's always cheaper and easier to buy the fast version of the car in the first place than it is to buy the slow version and try to turn it into the fast version.

Thing is, I don't want a turbo with 100k miles on it. Even if I don't turbo it, a supra would be a ton better than my honda accord...

Notfred, would you buy the turbo model or non turboed model assuming it has 100k miles on it?

If I wanted a turbo car, I'd buy the turbo model. It'd be a lot easier to rebuild or replace the turbo on the turbo car than it would be to put a turbo on the non-turbo car. There's a lot of other stuff that goes into adding a turbocharger besides just the turbo. The turbo car is already set up with all that stuff, the non-turbo car isn't.

I am a former '88 Supra owner. Man I loved that car. But I fell victim to the head-gasket problem that a lot of these cars suffered from. Mine blew once at 115K and again at 128K and I had to ditch the car. Be very careful buying one, and it better damn well have low mileage (which will be hard to find). They also had the sh!ttiest a/c - didn't work more often than it did. I had to replace it twice and then gave up. Also pretty poor gas mileage for the power. My new accord 6-speed is twice as fast and gets about 10 mpg better. Otherwise it was a great car. Good luck.

PS - Make sure you have a mechanic check compression and test the coolant for hydrocarbons before you even think of buying one.

A rebuilt turbo is about $500 tops. Still much cheaper then turboing the NA version.

The problem with the 3rd gen Supra is that it's heavy. I think my 4th gen is too heavy... the 3rd gen is even heavier. Also, the 7M Inline6 in the 3rd gen is a piece of junk. It blows headgaskets like a mofo. If I bought an 3rd gen Supra, I would buy an NA, then save my money for a 1JZ swap. 1JZ is a 2.5L Twin Turbo engine that was not sold in the US. You could buy a front clip of a j-spec 3rd gen supra with the 1JZ engine and 5speed for ~$2000. The engine will bolt right up to the 3rd gen supra's engine mounts without a problem.

That said, I would consider an RX-7 FC over the Supra. '89 and up for that car looks the best.
