I need a new anti-virus and firewall. Any suggestions, freeware please, I'm planning on buying another copy of PC-Cillian 04 sometime in the future.

But for now my new computer needs some protection. Nothing like Norton though, I hate how it's so intrusive.

Sorry, I would do that normally but there's so much info I don't know where to start and I'm in somewhat a hurry. And it would be quicker if I could just boil it down to one or two options

The freeware AntiVir is an excellent antivirus product. It contains no bloat, uses less ram than most antivirus products (save AVG6 and possibly AVG7), and provides a higher detection rate than any of the freeware antivirus products for home users. According to Trilobite of spywareinfo, AVG 7 only detects 69% of malware, aVast detects 80.08%, the other freeware antivirus apps fall short of Antivir's 85% detection rate.

Maybe I'll just update the title of my freeware thread to something like "Freeware replacements for commercial programs including THE BEST FREEWARE ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE"

no biggy, Antivir is a breeze to install. No registration, just install and go, unlike AVG which requires you to waint on a key to be emailed. AVG is a painless uninstall btw. dont run 2 real time antivirus applications. Sygate is an excellent freeware firewall, so stick with sygate. But no reason to use AVG since antivir is also free and does not require registration, since it has such a better detection rate than AVG.

Just one question: does Antivir check Mozilla mail? Couldn't find an answer on their page or your effort either.
Thanks.

edit... I seee the paid workstation has a POP3 scanner so I suppose it does.

Nope, you have to manually tell it to update.

figured so .. wonder why they have't implemented it. Probably reserved that for their paid subscription?
