Any suggestions?

Ok so far I've bought a

Western Digital HD 80GB about 80 dollers after rebate

a Linksys router for about 60 after rebate

and 2 Linksys nic's for like 5 bucks each after rebate.

anyhow hows the rest of the computer look? (I wanna keep it as close to 1000 as possible) I'll probably be just ordering from newegg.com and or buying from local stores.. (Best Buy, CompUSA, Office Max, Staples etc etc)

AMD Athlon XP 2100+ OEM- $156
(How long of a wait before the new chipsets are coming out? the Hammer ones? I dont know much about it I just read a review of CPUs.. and are those about to come out?)

Asus VIA A7V333 Chipset ATX Mobo- $131
(Any complaints with this board?)

Antec SOHO Tower Case SX1040BII 400 watt Black- $100
(400 Watts enough? also whats the difference between this case and the SX1040B?)

Themaltake Volcano 9 Heatsink and Fan- $27

Artic Silver Thermal Compound- $11

2x Wintec 256mb PC-2700 DDR333 RAM- $158
(These are from Samsung right? Thats what it says.. Samsung Original memory, anyhow should I just go with a stick of 512mb Samsung ram for like 170?)

Asus V8420 GeForce Ti4200 128mb- $203
(Hehe should I just wait and fork over liek 400 for the 9700? 😛)

Altec Lansing 3 Piece Speaker System Model AVS300W- $25

Anyhow I know I left out things like keyboard and mouse, and DVD etc but I'll probably just wait and find a nice deal on those.

So any suggestions? Comments?

The Hammers won't be out until sometime next year, probably in Q1/Q2.

Excellent motherboard.

Antec SOHO Tower Case SX1040BII 400 watt Black- $100

Yes, 400w is plenty. I don't know what the difference is. Also, that is one HUGE case, do you really need one that big? Unless you really NEED a case that can hold 10 drives, I would suggest you get the smaller Antec PP660B.

Themaltake Volcano 9 Heatsink and Fan- $27

Artic Silver Thermal Compound- $11

If you'd like to save about $20-30 on your HSF and AS3, you could either get the SVC GC68 (which is about $6) or the SVC Golden Gate (which is about $10), both form svcompucycle.com. They also sell AS3 for $5 shipped.

2x Wintec 256mb PC-2700 DDR333 RAM- $158

Actually, that's a new one on me. I can't quite figure out if its Samsung chips on Samsung PCB, or if its its on a third-party PCB. On the one hand, the listing at newegg says its Samsung Original and the RAM has Samsung model #s, on the other hand Wintec is a memory manufacturer, which indicates that its on a third-party PCB.

Asus V8420 GeForce Ti4200 128mb- $203

Well, in a month, could probably get a gF4 for a lot less, or in a little over a month from now the 9500 will be out which will presumably fill the $150-$300 price point for ATI and I'm guessing will cost about $250-ish initially and will even further drive down the prices on lower-end nvidia cards like the 4200 or the gF4MX line. Also, unless there's something really special about the Asus card that I don't know about, it sounds pretty overpriced. You could get the Gainward 128MB Ti4200 for $168.

ouch.. I dont wanna wait till next year for a computer 😛 so just stick to the AMD 2100+?.. but a few people on the Hardforum says go P4? I was originally going to get a P4 1.6 or 1.8.

Excellent motherboard.

Hehe ok I was just kinda concerned because people had it rated a 3 star or something.

I was going with this case because my friend told me to get a tower. How big is it exactly? The picture on newegg doesnt look so big.. has like 6 total slots inthe front.. is it like the Alienware ones? Ok just making sure on the wattage.

Do they perform as well as the Thermal ones? Hmm I went with the 11 doller AS3 because I didnt know and I'm always thinking more money= better 😛 So go with the 6 doller one?

my other friend suggested I get Generic Samsung.. LOL When i asked him about that he was like I dunno I got one that was listed Generic [Samsung] hes had no probs with it... anyone else got info on this?

Hmm so what should I do? I would like to get the computer done with before school starts. but the 9700.. sounds sweet. Also this is suggested from my friend..

As you can tell my friend helped me a lot lol.

Hi, I like your motherboard, but maybe you should get less ram by a more reputable manufacturer like Kingston, Crucial, etc. If you get like 256MB PC2700 of RAM you can always add more RAM when the prices fall down. The better the quality of the RAM the better. You can just get PC2100 RAM, but if you are going to be overclocking the PC2700 RAM is better.

The CPU opinion is up to you, right now the fastest processor is the P4, but if you are looking the best bang for the buck you should go with the AMD Athlon.

For the video card I would go with the GeForce4Ti 4200, since all GeForce4 are created equal you can get a cheap one and overclock it to get better results.

I would really look for a samller case a full tower is very big and it would use a lot of space. The way I would go about finding out the size of the case is to look at the specifications of the case and that should tell you the size. Mos computers now use mini tower or midsize tower. The case I would suggest is the Performance Plus660 - Mini Tower Case. This is a great case, is very sturdy, it has the Antec True Power Power Supply Unit which is really good and it offers two standard case cooling fans.

The place where I would get the parts for the computer are newegg.com or googlegear.com. This are great online stores, and they are both wonderfull stores. If you shop around and are trying to get the best bang for the buck you can also go to bizrate.com. The last one is place online where you can search for the best price online for computer components and you can check the ratings of the different online stores.

Hope this is helpful!🙂

hmm isnt Samsung ram good though? also I was looking at the minitowers and medtowers and none of them had 400 watt power supply.. I really dont want to pay for a ps then use it as a paperweight. I also heard googlewear had very bad delivery time.. somebody from Hard I think..

and yes it was helpful 😛

Samsung RAM on Samsung PCB is great RAM. Samsung RAM on a third party PCB is a question mark. Unless you're gonna put a crapload of of stuff in your case (5 or more drives, 8 fans, and a couple case lights or whatever) you don't need a 400w PSU. For most people a 300w PSU is fine. Just make sure its a good brand (Antec is one of the best). In fact, a quality 300w PSU is actually better than a crapy generic 400w PSU.

I see.. is there any way to check what PCB it is? Anyone know?

Hmm I dunno my friend upgraded to like 450 just to be safe with any future stuff.. hmm and another person already has a system like mine, and I think he had 330 watt? and he had problems unntil he upgraded to 400 i think

Was it a name-brand PSU like Antec, Enermax or Sparkle or a generic one? I'm guessing generic. But yeah, if you plan on using this PSU for several years, moving it from rig to rig, then a higher wattage PSU would be a good idea.
