I'm looking for a refurbed t5i or d3300. Looking for a few suggestions on what to look out for on a refurbed DSLR. Also when it comes to the Canon vs Nikon debate, are the differences in lenses really that much different? One of the advantages I always hear about Canon is that they have a greater selection of lenses and they can be had for cheaper. Anyone care to comment on that?

It really depends on which lenses you plan on purchasing. Nikon has released a lot of new lenses over the last couple of years. I chose Nikon because of the feature set and grip.

You should really go to a store and handle the similar models of each brand you are considering. Hands on time is the only good way to choose a camera system; the best lenses don't matter if the camera body form factor is uncomfortable for you.

The differences in Nikon and Canon lenses really only come into play at the high-end and special use case lens where you're going to spend over $1K for a lens. For mainstream lenses, you won't be hamstrung by either ecosystem.
