I have an IBM Deskstar drive (manufactured May 01) that decided spinning was too much work and it was going to quit. What should I do with it now?

(actually it still spins, but it sounds like a bearing went out or something. Really loud and makes squeaking noises)

you cant RMA it?

I would take it apart and use the platters to make windchimes... they work great!

Take it to the firing range and rent a nice high-power pistol.

I suggest the Fabrique Nationale Five-seveN. Twenty-round clip of 5.7x28mm.

Edit - OK, take the magnets out first. Then vent your frustration. :D

I think that drive had a 3-year warranty on it.

Go to HGST.com, since they now own IBM's hard drive operations. You can go through the RMA process and see if the drive is still under warranty.

Edit: Direct RMA link

I think you have a 3 year warrantee on that, so you can rma it. the new drives come with 1 year I think.

lol, aren't you glad you didn't pull it apart yet? I was going to say that my friend made a clock with his old HD...just put the hands ontop of the platters, looked pretty nice. in a geeky kind of way. :)

rma it man. I sent in my 45gb 75gxp, and I got back a 60gb 120gxp drive.

I was just going to say that the chances of you getting a nicer/bigger drive are pretty good.

Good luck, man!

I think you owe the forums half that storage. ;):p

Yeah, and the forums owe me $54 in overuse fees for downloading 72GB worth of HalfLife 2 videos from me, so we'll call it even :)

You can still RMA, but I don't know what you'll get back. RMA's are now being done through Hitachi.
