Any suggestions on this new build?

Okay, I know you guys get allot of these, so I guess I should just throw mine in the mix. Would be nice to have a thread where everyone with these question could simply post there rather than making a new thread every time. Maybe there is and I've just missed it.

I am going to build a new box in a few weeks. I haven't built one in five years. I'm upgrading from an AMD 64 3200 Venice on an Asrock 939 MB. The system is primarily used for surfing the web, email, and office/academic stuff..mostly text based programs, some light photo editing, watching movies, etc. My wife will play some online games via Facebook ( I do want to power a few virtual machines for linux and so that the online gaming doesn't clog up my system), otherwise, no gaming. I may play around with a little over-clocking the cpu. I want something that will last me as long as the last computer I built (5 years). What I've chosen is overkill for me, but I want a good setup. Here is what I've chosen so far:

-Thermaltake V3 BE Mid Tower Case
-Asus P7P55D-E LX LGA 1156 P55 SATA 6G/s USB 3.0 ATX
-i7-870 Lynnfield CPU w/Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
-G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2x4) 1333 (PC 10666)
-Corsair Enthusiast Series 650W Modular PSU
-XFX HD-567-YNF3 Radeon HD 5670 512MB PCI-E
-WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6 HD
-HP 24x DVD SATA Burner
-Window 7 64bit

$998 before shipping on New Egg.

Any suggestions would be helpful. I've realized the importance of at least keeping up with what's going on in the computer world, even if you are not planning a build. You can imagine how many things have changed since I built my last. I am usually an AMD man; haven't built an Intel based system since my old Celeron 300A O/C'd to 450.

I will also add a new monitor to the mix (biggest I can afford). I don't want to spend over $1300 for everything.

Thanks!

Good thing you mention running VMs, otherwise this would be extreme overkill. Heck, it still might be. You could probably get away with an i5 760 and 4GB RAM (I don't think linux uses that much right?), but then again, RAM is SUPER CHEAP now.

EDIT: Get a Samsung 1TB instead of the WD. Nearly identical performance, and the 6GB/S controller won't be utilized with the spinning platters anyway (heck, they don't use SATA 1.5GB/S).

Thanks guys, for the suggestions. I might just scale back to i5 and throw in the SSD. I had it on the list until right recently. One of the Samsung 470 64GB drives. Also, thanks for the heads up on the Samsung 1TB. Little nuances I've missed not paying attention over the years.

not to be a nuisance, but since I have a couple of weeks before I buy, I thought I would do a comparison with an AMD Phenom 1090T X6 based system. Can anyone recommend a good non-graphics integrated board?

Also, I've noticed that allot of people are using DDR 1600 ram instead of the DDR 1333 that I have spec'd for the Intel system. Is there a good reason for this?

**at this point, I am only seeing about a 160 dollar difference. The AMD system would keep me below the $1300 dollar target, but I am thinking the Intel based system's performance will be worth the extra? ($1260 vs $1400 and that is with a Crucial SSD & a NEC Viewsonic VP2365wb 23" IPS LCD Monitor)

I would not go with Phenom II X6. The i5 760's faster single-threaded performance would be better for the tasks that you describe. I'll go down your build part by part and offer suggestions:

-Thermaltake V3 BE Mid Tower Case

Thermaltake cases are chintzy junk IMHO. I'd get the Antec Three Hundred instead for the same price ($45 AR).

-Asus P7P55D-E LX LGA 1156 P55 SATA 6G/s USB 3.0 ATX

Looks good.

-i7-870 Lynnfield CPU w/Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus

I see no need for the i7 in this build. I'd grab the i5 760 instead.

-G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2x4) 1333 (PC 10666)

Don't pay more than $80 for 8GB of DDR3.

-Corsair Enthusiast Series 650W Modular PSU

Way overkill. A Corsair 430CX for $35 AR is more than sufficient.

-XFX HD-567-YNF3 Radeon HD 5670 512MB PCI-E

Fine

-WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6 HD

A bit pricy compared to the Samsung F3 1TB.

-HP 24x DVD SATA Burner

Fine as long as it's around $20.

-Window 7 64bit

Good.

I'd definitely look into adding an SSD to the build. I've probably saved you enough more elsewhere to fit a 60GB Vertex 2 into the build without changing the overall price.

Thank you, Mfen! I have decided to add the SSD for sure. I have a little more money at my disposal that I thought I was going to have. Thank you for all the other suggestions. I will definitely check them out!
