I'm looking for a free way to quickly put together a site. It's going to be a tech focused site so I'll need an easy way to add articles and pictures. That's about it. Any suggestions on a place to get free layouts. I'm kinda noob to site building so the simpler the better for me.

I use Wordpress for my site. Easy to install, customize, and maintain. Lots of great add-ons as well.

Wordpress or other blog is the easiest thing. Or just post a new thread on here every time you have a new and exciting thought, that's what I do.

I would recommend a CMS (Content Management System) most are open source (free).

Go to http://www.opensourcecms.com and check out the demos in the top left.

If you don't want to manually install a script, find a web host which offers softaculous, which automatically installs scripts in about 2-3 clicks, 10 seconds later and the site is ready to go live. Go here to find deals on web hosts.

Any questions, PM me before Monday 12/31/2012 evening.

Pretty much this. You could get a cheap webhost that comes with a script installer and have a WordPress instance up and running very quickly. If you want to make it look good, there are tons of good free themes out there; I'd check out the free ones from WooThemes.

Ahhhhh, I see you want free, but remember you will need to pay for hosting(which can be very cheap, I recommend madgenius.com. 1 of the admins posts here) and a domain.

themeforest.net is fucking great, but you have to pay for them. Very inexpensive, incredibly well written HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, WP, etc., etc. stuff. Honestly the themes there are top-notch! Check it out.

It's amazing the number of popular sites that use Wordpress.

The sheer number of themes, mods, hacks, modules, and other customization software is great.

I use Arvixe (http://www.arvixe.com/) for hosting. They're cheap, reliable, and have basically everything that's been mentioned here built in for free. So you pay your $5/month, get hosting, email, a domain, etc...and then if you want a DNN/Drupal/Wordpess-based site, just click a button and it will install it for you. Then you're goo to go.

Or talk to vivithemage, who runs a hosting company.
