The Nikon Coolpix S8000 is not really the best camera to get. The one that is getting real good reviews right now is the Panasonic Lumix ZS7. It has a wider shot at 25mm compared to the s8000 30mm and it also has a better telephoto at 12x optical compared to the Coolpix 10x. And they say they can go up to 16 x in inteligence mode or something like that. The ZS7 also has a video format that will get twice as much video on the same card as the Coolpix. The other comparable Canon SX210 IS , I think it is, has been getting bad reviews.
If you really want to drive yourself crazy get a memory card. Bring it to the store with you and take a at least a dozen photos with each camera and then take it home and load it into your computer and see if you can tell the difference.
In one review I read on a camera site, it said the following about the Nikon:
The Nikon Coolpix S8000 is one of the weaker cameras in this test when the images are viewed critically, at 100%. Pixel-level sharpness leaves a lot to be desired at all focal lengths, and even low ISO shots show some noise (and the smudging effect of noise reduction) as well as the characteristic halos around high-contrast areas that betray the camera's attempts to sharpen soft detail.
The price of that ZS7 has come down in the last few weeks and I think you can get them on Amazon with a $50 online coupon for around $250. I don't know if that coupon involves you signing up for some kind of credit card or not but that's what it was based on for one of the discounts I got there.
If you just want a basic ultra-compact light pocket camera without the telephoto and wide angle then you might think about one of those very light Casio's or Canon cameras for around $100. I had a chance to look at last year's Casio model FZ35, I think it was, and it was quite impressive, weighed only 3.6 ounces and was selling for under $100. It felt like a feather. And the quality of the images were very good to.
