I'll be there in the middle of May for a week and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for can't-miss photo places. I'd really like to go to Zion National Park, but that's just too far away to make any sense at this point.

In my searching, I think I want to at least get to Arches National Park. Other than that, I'm not really sure.

Thanks for any suggestions!

On your way to Arches, take scenic route 128. There are some great views. IMO, a must see at Arches is Delicate Arch. I want to go back. In Colorado, try to see Maroon Bells.

I want to hike Angel's Landing in Zion. You're right that it is in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for the suggestions. Keep them coming!

Do I have any chances of catching some wildflowers? Or is it too early?

The wildflowers will be in bloom based on elevation. You should hit good showings on the plateau and in the valleys. The alpine areas will, hopefully, still be butt deep in snow.

In Colorado:
the Durango to Silverton highway
As mentioned above, Great Sand Dunes
The marble quarry at Marble. CO
Black Canyon of the Gunnison
South Park (birding area)

In Utah:
Arches
Goosenecks of the San Juan
Canyonlands
the road from Capitol Reef to Escalante
Coral Pink Sand Dunes
Kodachrome Basin
The road to Hites crossing
If you get into Arizona then Monument Valley

Try the Rocky Mountain Oysters :)

As for picture spots, really, pull out a map and pick any of the smaller mountain towns, the drives are usually full of great pictures, and a lot of the towns themselves can be fun walking around.

Estes Park is a little overdone, but provides plenty of options. Depending on the weather, the sand dunes are also a lot of fun. And if you're up north, the hike up Grey Rock outside Fort Collins is beautiful, and can make for some gorgeous sunset shots.

If you're in the Denver area, Red Rocks Amphitheater is a nice place to take pictures. Garden of the Gods is actually pretty nice also. I went to Seven Falls in the winter one time and the waterfall was half frozen so that's something a little unique. If you're looking for city type scenery, 16th St Mall is fairly nice, and if you're there during Christmas, city hall is all dressed up with lights and the usual Christmas stuff that could be worth checking out.
