(1-2 hour stretch) king's island or that other theme park in cleveland (cedar point). The one with the 120mph coaster.

Cedar Point is the park with the new coaster. It about a 4 1/2 hour drive from Chicago. Was just there and had a blast. You must go.

How about up the Michigan coastline? Lots of neat sites-especially lighthouses-and there are a few really nice beaches along the way (St. Joseph/Benton Harbor, South Haven) and I'm sure more as you get more north.

Oh...looks like you are looking to fly somewhere....

There is a state park about 2 hours outside of Chicago called Starved Rock or something like that. It is alond the Illinois river and has lots of hiking. You can dip your feet in some of the pools that are at the bottom of the few waterfalls. It isn't Niagara Falls but it would be a great day trip or you can even go camping.

Door county Wisconsin is nice .... Peninsula state Park is great. Cave Point park is cool, Potowatimi Park is cool. Whitefish dunes are OK. All within an hours drive of one another

EDIT: Its about 4 or 5 hours drive from the city (takes me 3.5 to 4 hours from Wheeling IL, my grandparents live up there now .. So I usually make the drive a few times per year to visit with them.)

Just drive slow in wisconsin ... they love to give tickets to drivers from Illinois. And they cost like twice as much as tickets in Illinois.
