Any strategy games that actually allow for huge battles?

Supcom and supcom FA slow to a crawl and eventually crash, mods and fixes can only delay the crash and dont stop the slowdown when i try to spam 500+ tier 2 tanks or whatever.

Sins of a solar empire only uses 1 fecking core so again i get a game that slows to a crawl with many AI on a large map. I had high hopes for rebellion being multicore but its not, ill have to wait for sins 2 if they make one.

Is there any game that will allow me to play a huge battle without being limited by the game engine?

No Tanks or modern weapons, but the Cossak series allowed for huge epic battles.

I could never get into the total war series, i tried initially with shogun but my cho ko nu kept getting owned by shi ka ka or whatever. Its not obvious whats good vs what, i prefer sci-fi stuff anyways, you can tell that a monkeylord spiderbot is pretty much good vs all just by looking at the thing.

I thought about TA, i never played it in its prime though so i dunno if i would like it having played supreme commander already. I typically find if i play a sequel or spiritual successor first i miss all the stuff they added if i then go and play the original. Might be worth a shot though.

If you don't mind 2D games there's Gratuitous Space Battles, I think it's a great game. I don't have all the DLCs for it but I do enjoy some huge space battles from time to time, and there's no slow downs for me, in fact you can speed up or slow down the battle itself to make it last longer and see how your own ships perform with better accuracy and details (if slowed down on purpose).

And of course, Total Annihilation.

There are many, but I assume you're talking about mainstream, 3-D tactical strategy? Where each unit displayed represents one solider/unit on the battlefield?

It's obvious, and it's been suggested already, but nothing has the scale, graphical impressiveness, and easy gameplay like the Total War series. Seriously, they can't be overlooked if you're looking for "massive" battles.
Plus, there are so many mods that exist for each game in the series, you can change the setting/time period to almost anything you want.

For truly massive, there are plenty of historical, insanely detailed tactical strategy like Gettysburg: Scourge of War. It's not for the faint of heart though.

TA, TA Kingdoms, and Supreme Commander. Set unit cap to 1000 and hope to god your CPU doenst commit hari-kiri.

Also Act of War. No unit limit. And its possible to have infinite money so............

Oh wait, you DONT want that.
:p

Yeah I guess Total War series. Armies of thousands.
World in Conflict seems to be a lot more efficient about massive teams.

If you're open to Indie titles, check out Darwinia and its sequel, Multiwinia.

Rise of Legends if you're into sci-fi/mythology hybrids. I used to build huge armies there.

You might also like Rise of Nations, though it is older and it's 2D.

Other than those already suggested, of which Total Annihilation is the daddy.

http://springrts.com/

The home of several RTS games built around the Spring engine, designed for a Open Source version of TA but now expanded & regularly updated.

Total war series for sure. Nothing else comes close to the epic huge ass battles you can get into in those games.

OP what operating system are you running? Not 32 bit by any chance? Its just that I havent heard of SupCom crashing except in cases where its address space gets too large.

I think there is/was a fix for it. Do you play it multiplayer or singleplayer?

The slowdowns in FA only happen on certain maps, FYI.

when it comes to big numbers nothing can compare to the Total War series. big armies, big strategies and a lot of fun!

If you're only playing Sins against AI, you're doing it wrong and you're missing "the real Sins game". You should try it in online multiplayer against human opponents (who, unlike the AI, aren't suicidal and retarded).

I wonder if it's your computer. I was playing around with Supcom: FA just a few days ago, and just for kicks, I decided to run an 8-player skirmish match on one of the largest maps, consisting entirely of max-level difficulty AI opponents. I put the game speed on high and watched the show. There was seriously tons of shit happening on-screen and everything ran as smooth as butter.

What maps? I usually play setons clutch, however the shuriken map (huge map) also dosent fare that well.

What were the unit caps at?

Supcom FA will crash for me when it reaches 2.3-2.5GB of memory usage. It also will crawl when the unit count is kicked up, 8 sorian AI's with 2000 unit caps each is absolutely no go territory. Even 1 AI vs me with 2000 units each and the game will start to slowdown if i spam tech1/2 units and not just experimentals, its not unplayable but it gets boring because its so slow.

I hate other people :p
