Any storm chasers in here?

I have always been interested in severe weather and I'm assessing the possibility of aquiring a vehicle and other equipment to engage in severe storm research. I'm not talking about being one of those crazy guys who drive thier trucks into tornadoes, but tornadoes are a topic of interest to me. I'm talking legit research and data collecting. I have a weather station, and a compact desktop computer, and will be getting an internet capable cell phone. I also need other equipment as well. So if there are any other storm chasers here, drop me a note so I can ask you some questions!! There are practically no storm researchers where I live in South Jersey, so I'd be like the only one for 100 mi around. Thanks for any help you can give me!!!

There's a reason we don't have any storm researchers in South Jersey. I'm sure there's a similar dearth of seismologists and volcanologists as well 🙂

Why do you say that? We do get some WICKED T-Storms...also its not like I would stay only in South Jersey...

Have captured many Tornadoes, lightning and flooding pictures that have been in the News.

Cool, what can you tell me? What are some good organizations to be members of? Skywarn? NSSL? Where are you based at?

Here and there, I suppose. There's the occasional tiny tornado, too. It's just slow compared to out in the midwest, and it's not surprising that number of storm chasers is proportionately low.

Yes, Skywarn, so you are an Official Spotter for your County.

Also join WeatherMatrix.net , it is comprised of both Amatuers and Professionals.

The main thing I can tell you is that Safety is number one. The misperception by the general public is that Storm Chasers are crazy and put themselves in harms way, the opposite is true. As a chaser you know the course and speed and what stage of development storms are and you stay at a safe distance and set yourself up at the safest possible angle.
