My neighbors and I have taken to playing Spades almost nightly in lieu of our usual poker matches. We'll set to play to 500 points, but usually by then it's too close to call so we go to 1000. Once we went to 2000 points, that took hours.
It's getting harder and harder now that we're all getting so good. It's not unusual for two players to go Nil in a round and double Nils happen at least once a game.

It's so damn addicting. It's like hearts but you actually use your brains :)

Ahhh yes Spades rule. Used to sit around for hours playing after school with my buddies. When you and your partner really get good, it's fun to kick some a$$. Notice that everywhere you go seems everyone has there own rules they like to add to the game, that makes it even better and more exciting to play.

Yes. Don't play as much anymore though. But my spades buddies and I would usually play a dozen or two hands after a long day of classes.

Don't know any alternate rules. Do you have some examples?

Some play sandbags, some don't. Some play jokers, some don't. Some play third joker (2 of spades), some dont. Some play nil, some don't. Some play double nil, some don't. Ok, you get the point. ;)

Spades and Euchre are my absolute favorite games.

In college, I found out, the more I drink, the better I cheat. :)

Yep, the non-gambling cardgame progression goes:
Old Maid -> Go Fish -> Crazy Eights -> Canasta -> Hearts -> Spades -> Pinochle -> Bridge

Spades is sort of mindless tricktaking, you don't really get the brain involved until you get into pinochle and even then it's only on a rudimentary level. Bridge and poker are the only card games where having a brain is essential to success.

A little bit of Spades, but the game of choice is definitely Euchre. I can spend hours and not get bored with it. We played a ton in HS, now at college, I almost no one plays cards at all.
