Any spa/hot tub experts?

I have a hot tub out on my back deck which sees very regular use (nightly). I pay close attention to the water quality and always try to ensure it's optimal.

After each use, I add a dash of chlorine, and use Spa Up (a pH raiser) as needed to balance out the pH and alkalinity. I clean the filter every couple weeks and do partial water replacements a few times a year. I also use Sea-Klear to help dissolve oils and grime that might show up. On occasion I use the scented fragrance salts for some extra flair. Last but not least, I have a black rubber ducky dressed up and tattooed like a pirate.

So up until last night, the water has always been pristine. But last night... when I lifted the spa cover off, this AWFUL stench hit me. It smelled like the raunchiest mildew you can imagine! The smell was apparently coming from the water. I ran the jets for an hour and it was still there. It was below zero last night so I didn't spend too much time troubleshooting it right then and there. But... what the hell happened? It smelled like moldy gym socks. Just the night before, the water was pristine.

I figured it might need Superchlorinating, so I did that... have not checked the filter but will tonight. Any other ideas? Is this a common problem for spas?

Dead animal in the filter?

Take a sample of the water to a pool supply store and have them test it if the filter seems alright.

they're actually very low maintenance... just needs a minute or two every day or so to check the water... if you keep the water up to snuff, it tends to care for itself. Periodically hose out the filter, and on occasion you might need something from the spa store but generally...no trouble at all. I've had this for 18 months and until the problem in the OP, I've never had an issue with it. I think I spend more time caring for my 6-gallon fish tank than this hot tub.
