I have a customer who used to use SolidWorks professionally but has since retired (though he still likes to do stuff in it from time to time). According to him, since he purchased his copy the makers of SolidWorks changed their licensing model so that instead of buying the software, you lease it on a yearly basis for ~£1k per year. He can still use his copy without issues, but he stopped paying the support contract after he retired.
His computer's hard drive has problems and replacing it will probably be necessary sooner or later. He would like to know if SolidWorks are going to insist on him paying something like £1k (per year or otherwise) so that he can install the software on the new Windows installation (on the same machine but with a new boot drive).
