My company has this old computer with Windows 3.1 that is running a old program which we don't have the software installation disk and since it was a custom made software we can't get another copy of the program. If ever this old computer goes dead we will be in a world of shiz. Is there any disk image software like Ghost or Drive Image that supports window 3.1? I have look at Ghost & Drive Image and neither mention anything about supporting Windows 3.1. Since this computer is a critical part of our daily operation, I can't take any chance of install Ghost or Drive image to verify compatibility.

Thanks in advance.

Ghost runs from DOS, all it cares about it the file system (for the most part), so it will be fine.

You could xcopy it with the proper switches to a network drive.

You can use Ghost or DriveImage. Windows 3.1 just sits on a DOS FAT16 partition. Anything should support that.

The Windows 3.1 PC is a stand alone PC. It has no network supports. What I want to do is image the the drive to a new PC. Since Windows 3.1 sit on a DOS Fat 16 how would I format the new hard drive. Would fat 32 work? What kind of today's PC will be supported by Windows 3.1?
I was put in charge of the project and it anything should happen to the computer I'll be at the unemployment line.

Try MaxBlast from the Maxtor website. It should be able to mirror your drive. It's free.

Thinking about this some more, have you considered running this 'machine' under vmware or Connectix virtual PC? This was you could 'move' it around at ease to a current machine.

I've used Drive Image on Win 3.1 installs several times. It works fine, I've never had any issues.

You may want to look at a program named "xxcopy". Do a search for it. You would use the clone switch and run the xxcopy16.exe program, which is DOS based. This will copy all the files over. You could use the Max Blast software or Drive Copy, too.

If you just image it to another drive using Ghost, you won't need to format it - Ghost will just make a copy of the drive's data, and take care of partitioning and formatting on the new drive.
I don't think Win3.1 could see FAT32 file systems.
I don't think anything modern supports Win3.1 - it'll probably run, but don't count on loading any device drivers for fancy hardware. You should be able to run a driver for the CD drive in the Config.sys and autoexec.bat; maybe you can find an ISA soundcard in the FS forum that has DOS support. I liked cards that used the ESS 1869 chip - they were cheap at the time. Video - PCI or ISA, no AGP. I have no idea how Win3.1 will react; it might just treat the AGP as a PCI card, can't say for sure. Maybe a generic 4MB S3 PCI card will work - give you 256 colors instead of 16.:)
