Any software for scheduling power on and shutdown?

Hello,

My friend has a small business which runs a single database server (OS is Windows Server 2003 Std). Usually the server is left on running 24x7, but he would would like to configure it to shutdown during the weekends since no one ever uses it then. Is there any software available that would let you schedule a shutdown or place the server in stand-by mode and then later wake up by itself??

I came across another forum while searching and someone suggested WOL, would that work? I'll have double check this server to see it it supports it.

Thanks.

You don't need any software to do a scheduled shutdown. You just need to add the shutdown command to the scheduled tasks list.

Here is a list of the parameters for shutdown

I second this. It ensures that you have as little bloatware on your system as possible.

Well, I use a freebie called Poweroff. If it's bloatware, that's news to me. Been using it for years. Easy to use, I have it set up to turn off my computer every day at 1:08 AM, assuming it's on. If I want it to not do that for some reason, I cancel the action and next day it's all reset already. It has various options and runs as a service.

To turn on my computer I set the BIOS to do that every day at a certain time. Some days I don't want that to happen and I just flip a switch on a powerstrip and the computer gets no power and it won't turn on. However, my mobo's BIOS can only be set to do this one day a month or every day. To do it on weekends only, I'd need to plug the computer into a timer that would supply power on some days, not others. Very doable. I have such a timer I got at a hardware store (multiple On and Off events, all keyed to specific days and specific times), but I use it for my AV receiver, not the computer. Using the BIOS set to turn on the computer at a certain time every day in conjunction with a timer like mine you could get the computer to turn on automatically at a certain time on whatever specific days of the week you want. You could even get the timer to turn off power to the computer but it wouldn't be a proper shutdown. I'd use Poweroff to do that.

I didn't meant that everything is bloatware. There are small gems out there in the desert, and I think you found something sparkling here. 🙂
