Any software firewalls work with Vista?

From what I've been reading the Windows firewall has greatly improved.

yeah, i want something that will watch everything, including MS calls home....I use sygate now on m xp box....zone alarm is not yet ready for vista...

Maybe trendmicro...but you have to buy their suite.

I doubt any of them are vista ready since Microsoft changed the internals.

Trend Micro does indeed work. I am running it on Vista.

I tried the iolo system mechanic 7 pro as they claimed it was vista ready but it wasn't and the only thing it would do on my machine is shut down all internet traffic. I removed it, got a refund and then purchased windows live onecare which works on up to 3 machines but does do some annoying messages. Maybe in a couple of months the main software vendors will have some decent apps out on the market. Norton is beta testing their 360 software but I'm not feeling that generous to put it on my system.

Does the vista firewall have pop-ups which ask if you want an application to access the internet?

It would have to ask for my permission to allow internet access before I would consider using it.

You can do that with the Advanced Windows firewall. All rules are listed and you can block or allow what you want. Or custom rules on MS IP blocks, if your tin foil is riding up.

Sygate is dead, it was a nice relatively thin firewall but it's ancient. At this point you're not going to find anything as powerful, and with as many options, as the Advanced Windows firewall. Maybe something new will come out at some point.

Yes the Vista Firewall will give you a notification when a connection is blocked.

By default outbound connections are allowed and inbound connections blocked, the settings can be changed.

You can allow or block certain traffic.

Yes. It monitors outbound as well now and gives popups when it sees something new going out. On the inbound side you get no popup, it just whacks the connection.

I thought the built in Vista firewall would only block incoming connections. If you install the advanced firewall in Live OneCare that one will give you the prompts about outbound apps.

McAffee is supposed to work, but I can't get their web installer to work with IE7 so I can't confirm. So far, OneCare has done what I needed, but I do miss the ability to see connections to my PC and Traceroute them with a click like I could with McAffee.

The built in Vista firewall works on inbound and outbound connections both. No add-ons needed.

At this point 3rd party firewalls for Vista are a ripoff. You're not getting any added security, just another app with the potential to have a vulnerability. The firewall in Vista has more in common with an ISA server than with XPs firewall. It's using the same data-pump method to extract, drop, examine then reinsert packets into the stack.

If you are unfamiliar with the firewall go take a look at "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" in your administrative tools. This is the FULL interface for the firewall. The old "firewall" tab in Vista that resembles XP only shows the basics.

don't use 3rd party firewalls, they are not totally compatible with Vista- it will screw up everything and you will blame windows. Windows Vista firewall has greatly improved, they can block outbound connections too.

I agree with above posters. It takes awhile to configure the Vista firewall, but it does indeed work well. After setting it up I put a packet logger on my router to verify my settings, and it was fine.

Sygate Pro is what I used to use with XP, doesnt work with Vista. Kaspersky does work however for sure.

Can the built-in Vista firewall be configured to act like Zone Alarm for outbound connections, ie. make applications ask for permission before they can connect, the first time ?

Or does the user need to know that the application is going to want to connect in advance, and deny it prior to using the application ?

Reason I ask is, there are a lot of applications that want to connect to the internet, that don't need to. But if Zone Alarm didn't let me know, I wouldn't have known they were even trying.

Yes it will prompt you for permission when something new tries to go out. This is the default behavior so you don't have to configure it that way.

If a rule is found for an inbound/outbound connection the rule is applied. If no rule is found that applies:
Inbound blocks silently.
Outbound blocks and asks permission.

Everything fully configurable down to a very granular level if you want to change how it behaves.
