I took up skateboarding about a month ago (at age 24 :p), hell of a fun pass time. Anyone here skateboard? I did a search and couldn't really find any skate threads around here, I'm sure there must be a few of you around.

I skated for probably 10+ years. What you need to know? Just keep practicing your ollies and kickflips.

Wow, I didn't pick you as a skater spidey :) Well I've spent the last few days practicing ollies. Stationary I land about 4 out of 5 attempts now, but many of those landings are sketchy and I'd probably bail if I was moving. Unfortunately it's very wet here at the moment and will be for a few days, so I can't get a lot of practice :(

The most annoying thing is I have a set of Bones Reds bearings arriving today and I can't try them out for a few days. Arg!

Tony Hawk copied MY moves...that bum. We used to be tight back in the day, Tony and I. But he got a few lucky breaks busting my moves in front of the cameras. He's just lucky he got that whole game series named after him; it's what's supporting his under-talented ass these days.

I could duct-tape a busted roller skate to my left ear and still outskate him.

Believe it or not ollies/shove-its/kickflips are easier when you've got a little speed. The only way to get better is by constant practice and you generally will just keep getting better and more confident. ollies are the key, you simply must get comfortable with that. grinding is fun as well as railslides - but it all starts with the ollie.

On the ollie it's all about timing and foot placement. Helps tremendously if you crouch down some bending your knees a good bit. A fun thing to practice to get you to feel better and more in tune is just a simple 180 slide.

In my prime I could actually do mctwists on a ramp and had a pretty gnarly frontside stalefish. So much fun.

Now? LOL no my bones would never ever heal (though I do still have a deck in the garage...just in case).

Learn to ollie by putting your rear wheels in a crack (ie: cut) in the concrete sidewalk. That will prevent you from rolling. Just pop and jump. Its all about practice. And if you're foot coordination sucks (like mine does) good luck!

practicing in grass helps too, as long as the dirt isnt too soft. i still have a shcmitt stick sitting in my closet with old school ramp wheels on it, my kids laugh at it because it is 32" long and 11" wide and only has a tail on one side. punks. i did get to skate with lance mountain, tony hawk and steve caballero back in the day at del mar, had a lifetime membership there, right up until they closed down. used to drive over there a couple times a month, since we lived in az. great place. i was never really great at skating, my street moves sucked and my ramp time was average, but i had a great time and my board was like a third arm, i skated everywhere i went. last time i really skated was in 1990, before i met my wife.

Couple of quick questions for the skaters out there.

1) What procedure and products do you recommend for cleaning bearings, and how often?

2) Skating in the wet. Obviously very bad for your bearings, but I've got some cheapo junk bearings in the board at the moment and I want to skate to a friend's place tonight. Is it only the bearings that I should worry about, or will the wet weather damage the board/trucks/bushings?

Also another quick question. I saw some Youtube videos of an amazing skater who looks like a hippy with a huge bushy beard. Anyone know the guy's name? I want to see more of him but I forget who he is.

You've only been on a board for a month. You shouldn't be too concerned with bearings. If you feel crunchy under your feet, then worry about bearings.

Stop worrying about the gear and get control of your ollie and the board itself. Until you can ollie a skateboard without even looking or thinking about it your gear has no impact.

I almost wish you were in my area, I could teach you what you need to know in a few hours. That's another point - you need somebody to teach you, this is not something you can just pick up on your own. Go skate with people better than you, they'll be glad to help.

Right on brother, right on. Same time frame here. The names you mentioned were sick and it's amazing what the sport is doing today...

"Nice 540 there but the grab wasn't that good and he's only 6 feet above the coping"

Oh well, I'm almost 40 and can still do a kickflip with my eyes closed. Damn, now I want to skate.

i work for the city and have to keep an eye on the skatepark, and i wish i could learn to skate...but i have no rhythm or balance, and im pretty sure id bust my ass hard. i get along well with the kids and other guys out there, most of them are pretty cool and keep asking if i want to try. i should take them up on it

theres an annual competition there, the park has only been open 4 years i think, and some guys told me when it opened some old hippie with a beard showed up and beat everyone.

I attempted it back in the day, but was uncoordinated, fell and hurt myself a lot.

I suppose I'm glad I didn't keep up with it and went to some other sports where i'd be less likely to break my bones.
