Any simple way to keep iCloud and move to android?

My dad has some giant cell phone screen envy and I'm thinking the xiaomi note 3 would be an economical upgrade to his iphone 6. the only hangup is that his laptop, desktop and current phone use icloud to keep photos synced.

any easy way to add his android to the icloud ecosystem? upload photos automatically at a minimum? I think viewing all his photos is a luxury he can lose.

Why not move the photos from icloud to Google photos and then sync future ones to there? I would think that would be effectively the same thing.

Most iCloud content is only available through iOS, Macs and Windows, so you couldn't do a straightforward switch. You'd have to migrate to Google services, and that might hurt the desktop syncing.

Here's a question, though: if he wants a big smartphone screen, why not just update to the iPhone 7 Plus when that launches (probably this September)? It'd be a lot easier, and that Xiaomi phone will seem old hat by that point. Yeah, Apple is locking you in to its ecosystem... but if your dad is happy with iCloud, there's no point to making his life unnecessarily difficult.

Limited retirement income. I'm the upgrader who gives him my old phone (i gave him my iphone 6), but I don't see myself upgrading from my 6s plus for a long, long while (it's surely good enough). I may be able to convince him to cough up to a 6 plus when the 7 come out, with the 6's resale value it shouldn't be too bad.

I think I'll keep him from jumping to android. I just recently set up icloud syncing on all of his computers and he really likes how seemless everything is. jumping ship to google would confuse things, though I know it's not a huge deal
