Have you looked into cards made by Avermedia. I think they're the primary competetors to cards made by Hauppague. However, I think the PVR-250 is the defacto standard as far as TV capture cards go (the best support and such)

I like the Leadtek family cards myself. I used a TV2000 XP Deluxe for over a year and finally upgraded to an Expert so I could have a 10bit chip. The Deluxe is still cranking away though, it's in my wife's computer.

check out the "hauppauge pvr-150mce", its supposed to be as good as the 250 and costs alot less. this is because they've managed to put into one chip what was on two chips. also keep a look out for the "theatre 550" chip from ati, it seems good. cards, based on the "theatre 550" from sapphire and gecube should be releasing soon.

both these card have mpeg2 encoders on board, so a two hour movie is saved in about 2gb, and keeps the cpu pretty load free.

It would be nice if it worked with linux to. If I ever figure out what I am doing I'll probably make the switch. Its my understanding the pvr-250 does, with myth-tv anyhow.
