I'm going to be a freshman in college next fall and a new computer is going to be one of my high school graduation gifts. I'm eager to build a new computer now. I know that technology is always advancing yada yada yada? Will there be any significant leaps in hardware technology or larger price drops than normal between now and August?

My gut says X2's will be out by then so dual core is the most exciting tech coming out...

Yeah, dual core will be out sometime over the summer, but pretty expensive. There's talk of nvidia's next best card being unveiled 'soon' (but not necessarily released) which might push down prices of 6800's a bit.

dual core is the only thing on the CPU front. But *IF* it is out the cheapest is still $500 bucks for AMD.

Really the only thing that you need to worry about are video cards that come out in the fall. If things stay on track we should see next gen cards around the fall... that means a month after you get your new computer.

The cheapest may be 500 bucks for AMD but it will destroy and Intel dualcore in performance except the 1000 840EE part which it only beats modestly. LOL

Remember, you need a new 955 motherboard for Intel dualcore (HMMM, I wonder if 955 allows singlecore chips, it should) while 939 allows you to use singlecore now and dualcore later.
