Saw this Vespa on Craigslist, wanted to ensure that the price seemed fair. Would be for my wife.

Is there any specific reason you want a Vespa? For in-town commuting at 35mph or less, you're better off getting a new Yamaha Vino. They look similar, will be more reliable, and use less fuel.

$2400 looks high to me. you could get an 09 piaggio fly 50 with CVT for about $1900, and the 150cc version for $2600 msrp.

42mpg? Is that right? That seems very very low for a scooter.

My Suzuki SV650 gets 48mpg city and 57 on the freeway and will do 0-60mph in 4 seconds flat. Of course, it's a regular motorcycle and not a scooter though.

that ET2 if i remember right has 12HP so actually in CA is freeway legal.

Its a good bike, easy to ride, expensive due to the italian styling but a good bike. I suggest you check for leaks and stuff.. or if you buy it do the maintence on it right away - oil change, filter, lube stuff, valves (if needed), spark plugs.

Or you could just buy a real motorcycle...for the same price.

Why? The OP is looking for a scooter for city commutes for his wife. A scooter will provide more comfy, ergonomic transportation with more storage space.

Fair enough. I'd look at the Piaggio line of scooters as well. They make some really cool 3 wheelers but they are pricey.

In that case, he may want to look into a Scaraebo. These are technically scooters, but should really be considered automatic motorcycles due to their size. Larger tires/engines make it just as capable in many instances, but you have the ergonomics of a scooter with a CVT.
