Any sane reasons to go XP?

Hey all

Looking at all the XP related posts and wondering what the heck has got into everyone. Whats so great about XP thats making everyone want it? Is it just coz its new or something? From what I've read about it so far it just looks like a big expensive virus to me. Ah well, sorry for being so ignorant but I've just recently gone Linux and have been busy learning up on it, no time for m$ propaganda.

cheers

Well a friend of mine who swears by Win 2000 told me he thinks XP is basicly the ME of the NT generation based Win OS'es. As for me I could care less since I like Linux more but for some who have struggled with and used ME and who have never used a OS like 2000 it feels like something that is so much more stabled then the 9x series most are used to. Hell even Steve Balmer has recently admited that the 9x series was crap.

I absolutely love XP, so far. I haven't had a crash, yet, and the GUI is beautiful in my opinion. I constantly had problems with ME and 98, especially when I was setting up a more complicated system. XP has been able to handle everything that I have thrown at it, except for a minor problem with a "My Camera" icon. I'm not a Linux user, but I've heard of its shortcomings (hardware incompatibilites....).I'm not saying that Microsoft is an altruistic company or anything, but I think a lot of people give them a bad wrap. I guess people like to have a pinup for their dart board or have been reading 1984 too many times. Anyway, I really love the ease of use, the interface, the organization of files, and how it "reacts" to my camera and MP3 player. I can see why one would call it the Me of the NT OS's.

If you're currently using Win2K, there is no rush. Otherwise, there are plenty of reasons to switch.

And there are bigger improvements between Win2K>WinXP than there was Win98>WinME.

Here's some reasons for using it:

-> No longer have to dual boot between Win 2000 (stability) and Windows 98 / ME (for games). This will free up some significiant hard drive space.
-> Eye candy: Nice looking interface with more "styles" or "skins" on the way.
-> Quicker booting.

Here's some reasons for not using it:

-> MS thinks all users are idiots. The "wizards" tend to bother me, but they are mostly contained within the Plus! pack.

It largely depends on what OS you're using now. For 98/Me, then by all means upgrade to XP Home! You will love the stablility of the Windows Engine😉 and it's well worth the $100. For 2000 users, well, there isn't much going for the decision to upgrade to XP Pro because it really doesn't offer much. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with XP Pro, it's just not worth $200 for those on 2000 Pro. Probably wje's points pretty much sum it up for 2000 users. We finally get the quick booting that Me users have allways had, we don't have to dual boot with 98/Me, and the interface does look cool. So there's my 2c

The wizards are nice. Ya, could do the same thing without them but they make it so simple you don't even have to think. That's nice.

Before you posted this, you could have checked out the other 10,000 threads about this same thing. They are all the same.
BTW, Linux is a homo. ;0

Currently a Win2k user /LinuxSlack - dual boot.

The only thing that makes me stay on win2k/lunix instread of winXP/linux is the thing that;
The same company Micrapsoft has the same price for the win2k and winxp,
(actually win2k are more expensive than winxp) (always talking about prof editions)
in other words The sam company says that winxp are nothing better that the win2k.

Cheers...
