frist time ut player(okay, I know, But I just got it yesterday)

there should be UT servers out there that's for newbies - I've seen several of them, but I'm not sure if they're dedicated. here's a hint: practice, practice, practice. Practice against the bots. put the bots level at the same level as you and adjust accordingly. it helps.

Actually you need to get on a map with at 18 people so you can see their tricks. If you like CTF then get on a server called Six Feet Under. You'll get better real fast. Learn to use the shock rifle.. It's on of the hardest weapon to learn but once you've master it. Can't play without it. Especially when defending.

Actualy im not too bad. On some servers I win some times. The problem is that in huge games the first one to get to the shield belt/ rocket launcher will win because all you do is die/respawn because there are people everywhere(you dont have time to get a gun) the guy with the r//shield belt will rape all.

CTF is the best. DM is the worst in my opinion. There is not object except to kill people. In CTF you actually have to be creative and/or smart to beat some of the best.

CTF is also my favorite, but DM also kicks some arse. you just have to look beyond the simple fact that the only objective is to kill others. get into a DM with some good players and then see whose skills puts them on top😉.

all it takes is practice. UT was the first i played that utilized both the mouse and the keyboard. b4 that i would have to say the only other game of the sort that i played was Doom, which used only the keyboard. anyways, i sucked at UT at first...my bro gave me the game, and we would play on a server together and he would kick my @ss. but then i played on my own for a few hours/days. its like driving a stick...you try it for the first time and think you'll never improve, but after a few days you notice a dramatic rise in skill. it took me no time to get good at UT...just give it a few days...

i'll keep this thread in mind and drop you a line if i ever put my own server up...in the mean time, good luck🙂

Can someone host a UT server for us Anandtechers? There's no way you're gonna be good in a few days though. You need to keep playing so you can get use to all the keys. I just play agains Hubbs the other day and he's pretty good. I usually suck at DM but I can hold my own on CTF with something like Lava or Face. Man I a DSL line that can probably handle 6-8 eight people but I only have on comp so I can't host.

I think that the "play as spectator" option is severely under-rated. Clinth, I was reeeeally bad at UT when a friend gave it to me as a Christmas gift a year ago. Eventually I found a nice server which repeated only my favorite DM map ("Elmo's Deck 16][ server&quot😉, on which I lurked as a spectator for a while (it is listed as "expert only&quot😉, and practiced a lot with bots at high difficulties (slowly increasing as I got better) Once I felt comfortable, I joined, and eventually I was even able to win once on that server.

I can't say that I know of any newbie servers, though.

Gosh, this makes me want to play UT again... (this year the same friend gave me Q3, and I am going through a similar process, hehe). Anyway, practice, play as spectator, take-up the offer for tutoring, and you'll get good enough to avoid getting nuked instantly and be able enjoy UT like so many of us do.

Have fun with it! 🙂

Play Instagib. You spawn with your shock rifle, there are no fancy pickups, no ammo to run around trying to get, and everyone has the same weapon. It all comes down to skill. Well, that and ping. And yes CTF OWNS JOO!!!

Thanks for all the tips, I Played CTF and that was much better then DM A least I didn't get killed instantly. I will keep playing against bots.

there was a thread a while back about UT, and quite a few people suggested hosting an AnandTech UT server session. well if anyone decides to do something about this let me know b/c i would love to play UT w/ fellow AnandTech members. i wold host a server, but i'm behind a pain in the @ss firewall😉

I just got UT the other day too..I like it so far...I know dont know how long before I try playing online though. I am wondering...what is the best keyboard control setup?

This is another stupid question, but is there any way a joystick (standard) could be used well with UT?

best setup for any shooter game has to be the "WASD"

to play against bots simply create a practice game with a lot of bots and their abilities. Start off in DM. have fun!

ive been playing ut since it came out. havent stopped since.

by the way, does anyone here know how to run the timedemo? i used know how, but i forgot the exact instructions. i want to run it b4 and after i install updated drivers for my video card so i can see if there's a significant difference. thanks...

Here's my basic setup.

F=strafe right
D=backward
E=Forward
S=strafe left
W=translocator
space bar=jump

Mouse
left button=primary fire
right button= secondary fire
wheel up= minigun
wheel down= rocket launcher
thumb button= shockrifle(favorites weapon)

and if you wanna see timedemo just press ~(it's above the tab) and enter timedemo 1 to turn on and timedemo 0 to turn off..

yeah...but i had one that ran on its own. the computer would play DM - Gothic for about 5 min. on its own, and when the time was up, i would hit the "~" key again and it would have the min, max, and average fps rendered in that timedemo session. does anyone know what i'm talking about?

nevermind -paldo...i just figured out that timedemo 1 displays framerates as you play. and when you turn it off, the ~ box shows the min, max, and average fps for the time you were running the timedemo. i used to have one that ran on its own like i said above, but i think you had to type demoplay xxxxxxxx (some prompt)...but the one you suggested works fine...thanks

thank you .paldo. that seems like a great key layout.. I will try that whenI get home tonight. (what is the translocator?)...

Oh yeah, how do you use the anti-gravity boots?

Of all the poeple's i've seen mine still makes the most sense to me.

sdfe for movement
space jump
mouse1=primary fire
mouse2=2ndary
mouseclick=flak
mouseup=shock
mousedown=rox
thumbbutton=tele -if you play ctf learn the tele, like use it not just know how it works
pinky button= best weapons- then my listis nuke-mini-plasma-dual hangusn
v=rifle
b=piston-piston jumping
tab=drop weapon

then the voices
t=take their flag
g=defend the base
w=incoming
q=coverme
a=on my way
caps=our flag is here

antigrav boots are automatically used whne you jump if you pick them up. the only way NOT to use antigrav boots when you have them is to hit the 'walk' key and jump at the same time. This only is usefull for on lava when you are in the red base for example and are on the ledge where the rifle is to jump that little wall to get outa the base you do walk-jump so you don't waste a boot i have shift as 'walk'
