Any revolutionary games on the horizon?

I was sitting here thinking about upcoming games, and I can not think of any that boast some kind of revolutionary/game changing technology.

Rage was the one I was hoping would change everything about PC gaming, but it seems the technical glitches are going to get in the way.

Borderlands 2, we will have to wait and see

Brink seems to have been a let down.

Diablo 3, have to wait and see, but I do not expect any kind of revolutionary/game changing technology.

Dead island, seems to be getting good reviews after the glitches were fixed.

Half-life 3 / Episode 3, rumors say valve is working on a new game engine, but nothing official.

Homefront seems to have been a flop.

Metro2033:first light, wait and see

Serious Sam BFE, wait and see.

Related thread - Getting bored with gaming

Back in the 1990s there was enough "new" technology coming out that people were kept interested. These days, its like very little "new" stuff is coming out. Its probably been several years since graphics made me say "wow", much less any game that brought something new to the table.

2 games in recent memory that stand out to me was the left 4 dead series and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. I enjoyed the world that both games created.

I do not see anything on the horizon that is going to be a major game changer with the pc gaming industry.

Define Game Changer. I think Guild Wars 2 seems damn innovative for an MMO and if it delivers should offer a great fresh take on MMO's and finally something else to play other than WoW that is no a WoW clone.

I think Rocksmith has the potential to be unique in its particular genre. I know I am looking forward to seeing if they can pull it off.

I think that definition has to left to the individual.

If you play MMOs, your definition will probably be different then someone who plays first person shooter action games.

So your saying you don't think theres innovation in your chosen genre? Maybe you should find a better genre.

there was an indie space sim that featured seamless flight between atmosphere and space...that looked pretty awesome.

can't remember the name right now though.

Maybe you should not be so critical. If I decide to play a genre, that is my choice.

Are you going to contribute anything to the discussion, or just criticize the choices of others?

I just think theres enough good games releasing with enough innovation. Very little of it is in FPS games though.

Orcs Must Die might actually be something your interested in its a third person tower defense style game thats very actiony and tons of fun.

Battlefield3 and Diablo3 are about the only games I have my eye on these days.
These two, plus SWTOR. (Already know your feelings on it so...)

I'd have to say BF3, which is combining all the great aspects of BF2 with a new engine. And from what I've seen and played so far it's going to be great. There will not be another game like it for quite a while.

Project Zomboid seems to be a relatively novel game.

Terraria and Mine Craft were somewhat revolutionary in what they brought.

I just started playing The Witcher 2, and I have to say that I am impressed with how believable they make the decisions in the game, which is somewhat revolutionary for an RPG game in my oppinion (they are usually over the top, and not remotely believable).

I don't play that many games, so I don't know of any other trailblazers, but I would suggest checking out some of the other posters suggestions.

Would be absolutely amazing if this was incorporated into SWTOR!
I dunno about that. Abilities like that seems better suited for gameplay that is more... freer. I might be wrong, but TOR doesn't seem to want players to freely explore around, so having spaceships land and take off from any part of the planet would be wasted in that game. I would say something more open and sandbox-based... like SWG, would be a better fit.

Well, Diablo 3 is going to have a Real Time Real Money Auction House, whether you like the idea or despise it, you have to agree that it is revolutionary (in at least to the degree that no one has tied it on this scale before.) I think that the reason that so many people are so heated about it is because we see the potential for it to be a real revolutionary change in the way games are played.
They will also be throwing out the entire skill build tree and letting you freely choose your skills and re-choose as you see fit, maybe more evolutionary then revolutionary, but still worth mentioning.

I'm playing the beta of Path of Exile, and I think that the skill gems that level and huge passive skill tree concept of that game feels very revolutionary, at least I've not seen anything done quite like it before (although, I admit that it is somewhat similar to D3's skill system, at least in concept)

Real revolution is a messy business and all those 90s games pushed the technology as hard as they could. The pace has slowed a bit, but games like Crysis and Metro and Rage are still pushing it as hard as its possible. If you just want pretty pictures I suggest taking up photography.

Will it matter if they are any good? You're just going to rage, anyway, when they aren't released on Thursday or Friday.

GW2 is the only one I can think of, from what they've shown and said about the game it looks to be a big change from what MMO's are now.

I don't think he's talking about graphics.

I personally have yet to play a game that I felt was truly revolutionary since the original Portal. That game still amazes me to this day.

Not to say anything released since then is bad. I've loved playing Starcraft 2, Team Fortress 2, etc. but they aren't revolutionary, just very very good evolutionary games.

I guess you could put EVE Online under revolutionary as well. 40 thousand players (with a player-driven economy) all in the same game world is pretty damned impressive, despite what I might think of the game now.

Having played metro2033 and crysis, I have to disagree.

To me, Crysis has a half-life 2 feel to it. The only thing I found that stood out was the suit idea. But otherwise crysis seemed linear, you could drive boats and trucks,,, find bad guys, kill bad guys,, repeat, just like in HL2.

Metro2033 could have been a great game, but there are several glitches I did not care for - like running to hordes of werewolf looking things and no ammo, and the controls of metro2003 seemed "jerky".

Nature photography is already a hobby of mine.
