Any recommendations or tutorials on how to capture video to make a tutorial?

Yes, I need a tutorial on how to make a tutorial. 😉

I need to record a tutorial on using a specific piece of software. The simplest requirements are that it be able to capture my screen and record my voice which I know I can do with lots of different programs.

However, I've also seen a lot of cool tutorials that do things like:
  • zooming in on a section of the screen to show what the person is doing in close up
  • drawing boxes around sections of the screen to highlight which area you're talking about
  • graying out the screen and just leaving the part in color that you're talking about
  • and lots of other things like that
Can anyone recommend me software that can do that that I can look into?
The main requirement is that is has to be FREE since this is just a personal project I'm doing for a friend and don't want to spend money on it.

I'm also searching youtube but haven't found much that's current or exactly applicable but maybe I'll come across something there.

Ice cream Recorder (freemium) or CamStudio (free) might be able to pull those off while I know TechSmith Camtasia will do all of the above but its a steep price tag. It does have a 30 day trial and I think you would like it.

If you pay $20 you get snagit and camstasia as well as all the other software from the lower tiers. Not sure if it's the exact software you need so you'll have to research. The bundles normally only last 2 weeks so you have plenty of time.
