Any recommendations of things to do in South Beach?

I might fly down this weekend to burn some free hotel stays. I've driven around down there, but never stopped.

Give me some places to research that I should check out.

I would swim in the ocean.

Other than that, there are 12 Taco Bells within easy driving distance of South Beach.

Which order should I do that in?

Wait....lemme rephrase. Do you want me to get eaten by sharks before or after I have explosive diarrhea?

South Beach is more of a party scene than probably your average ATOT high roller engages in.

Fort Lauderdale is more my jam personally.

.

Pretty much. I might have been interested in going to South Beach in my twenties. Now it would just be annoying. Besides the beach. Unless it was too crowded with twenty somethings, then that would be annoying too.

I like Fort Lauderdale too....but the hotel in South Beach was $800/night, so I decided to stay there.

I've been a number of times for work and vacation. Unless you're really into going out most of it is not going to appeal very strongly though the scenery is certainly pleasant. There are some chiller vibes to be found but it takes some looking.

I've done similar on occasion for other places. As far as things to check out look at the restaurants along Alton Rd, a number of better Italian places than the tourist traps on Lincoln. I like Swizzle Rum and Drinkery for cocktails but I'm partial to really good rum drinks in a dark intimate environment.

Back in the mid to late 90's I was going to all the insane NYC clubs that were still insane - Limelight, Tunnel, Roxy, Paladium and then smaller venues too. I would have been fine with South Beach then. I did like the diversity of the NYC scene in how many different kinds of people went to them, not in regards to race or ethnicity, but style and taste that spanned the entire gamut. South Beach always seemed to be mostly just about the more fancy tip. But, Miami did have a dope breakbeats scene which we did not have up here. Always wanted to go to the Winter Music Festival there that was all electronic music back when the rave scene was still a big thing.

Now it's all a bit much for my mid forties demeanor.

Drive down to the Keys instead.

This is high on my to do list over the next year or two. I've been all (and I mean ALL) over Florida for pleasure and work but never to the Keys. Fortunately the husband finally read a favorable write up that interested him so now I've got the green light to plan.

I've been to the Keys like 6-7 times. I love it down there. We pretty much always stay in Marathon. Only stayed in Key West once. It's fun down there but def more of a party place. When I went there we didn't have kids. Now we do though and I'd rather stay north of there.

I want to go to the Keys, but my wife doesn't like how dirty it is. I think she generally doesn't like the locals much either around Key West. I'll have to check Marathon out.

I may definitely plan a few trips to the Caribbean and the Keys in the next few years. Thinking about St. Maarten maybe even next month even though it's on the CDC list.

Has your wife been there before?

Because there is nothing dirty about it. Maybe Key West you could call "dirty" because it's so compact and everyone just hangs out around the main strip on Duval, and there are homeless people around there too. But I never thought it was dirty at all and been down there 3x (only stayed once though).

But the other Keys? Nothing I would consider dirty. We enjoy Marathon the most because it has some actual beaches close by and they are pretty good ones. And we really enjoy one of the resorts down there and it has it's own little lagoon. But it's crazy how expensive the prices are right now down there.

We may be hitting up Belize in the next couple of months for the first time, just the wife and I. If not we're planning to go to Marathon for Mother's Day with the kiddos.

Key West. Like I said, I will try to drag her down there not booking the trip and paying for it up front. 😎

Gotcha.

Key Largo is pretty cool too especially if you like to snorkel/dive. I think the visibility around there is the best in the Keys from my trips down there. Islamorada is pretty chill too and known for its fishing.

NYC is one of the greatest cities in the world, and it definitely has its dirt to it. Not everything great is sterile clean and sanitized.

My buddy who has been all over this country, including multiple multi-month cross country road trips, and then many many road trips all over the western third of the US now that he is based in Denver, plus road trips all over the Northeast from when he lieve in NJ, and at least a few trips to Florida - he says the Keys are a top 5 spot in the whole country. And I trust his judgement. Just something about the beauty along with the vibe that is very special to him.

The Keys doesn't "feel" like most of Florida. It definitely has it's own quirkiness. There are 2 misconceptions that I have seen/heard about when it comes to the keys too.

1. They are full of nice beaches. That simply isn't true. Most keys don't even have a nice beach. It's mainly rocky around the shoreline and there are far and few beaches between. However, if you can get out on a boat, you will be in some crystal clear water if the visibility is good. As mentioned, Key Largo snorkeling is awesome. I've had some of the clearest water there on a good day and you see some awesome marine life too. I haven't dove in Key Largo, only in Marathon, and clarify around Key Largo was better.

2. People think "the Keys" means "Key West". It's not just Key West. There is A LOT more to the Keys than Key West. That is just the more tourist attraction Key due to being the last one and having it's party centric atmosphere. It's super quirky down there and yeah, the locals are ... different. Very hippy'ish and a lot of homeless people hang out downtown near the tourist spots, but they don't bother people. Duvall Street is like Bourbon Street Jr. There is one beach on Key West at the military base and it's super rocky and not really that nice. Much nicer beaches more north of there.

Once you hit the middle keys on the drive down, that is when you start to see the cool bridges and stuff. That is where True Lies was filmed where it's the long ass bridge over the turquoise water. It's neat driving the upper keys but it's more seeing like quirky stores and stuff whereas you start to get to the middle ones, you drive through a little town, then you have a 1 lane road with water a foot off the road on each side and/or on a bridge for miles, then back to the little islands.

Everything you need to know about things to do in Miami can be learned from a Will Smith song.

I've lived an hour north of South Beach for 30+ years and only been to South Beach once. Was enough for me.
