im planning to buy a digital camcorder for my new coming baby. the price range is under $800. most likely i will take the video indoor so i need as good low light perfomance as possible. dont care other things like still imagine. i have already done some homework, but it seems all camcorders under this price range perform poorly at low light. what u guys think about that? thx a lot.

thx LED, i checked the review of GV250, it is a nice camcorder, but it has similiar low light performance as GV150, which is almost $300 cheaper. i am wondering if anyone has tried either of the above two?

You've found the problem with small consumer digital camcorders.... they use tiny chips to capture light, and some do it very poorly. I have the Panasonic PV-GS200, and it does fairly well. I usually shoot in great light, on stages and auditoriums, or outdoors. Not many camcorders will record good video with just a single lamp or a candle in the room. Even though these camcorders have 3 chips... they are 1/6 of an inch big!

You might be able to adjust the gain to improve the image. Panasonics have great manual controls. I usually have to reduce the exposure to eliminate the white ghost faces on a well lit stage!

Ignore the Magic Pix on Panasonic camcorders. It's a screwy setting for slowing the shutter and trying to compensate for low light. It doesn't work. This is not a solution for shooting in low light.

I've had good luck with my Panasonic GS200. I haven't noticed any horrible performance indoors. If nothing else, the video appears dark, just like the room. You get what you shoot. I usually keep it on manual and make adjustments on the fly. I assume the GS250 makes improvments on my model.

thx MScrip, it seems the whole 3ccd line of panasonic has very similiar low light performance. Im gonna take GV150 since it has better price🙂
